NEW YORK (AP) - President Barack Obama read a biblical passage about refuge and strength and the names of the Sept. 11 dead echoed across a transformed ground zero Sunday as the nation and world marked 10 years since the worst terrorist attack on American soil.

Standing behind bulletproof glass and before the white oak trees of the new Sept. 11 memorial, Obama read Psalm 46 from the Bible after a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., when the first jetliner slammed into the World Trade Center's north tower a decade ago.

"God is our refuge and strength," the psalm said. "He dwells in his city, does marvelous things and says, be still and know that I am God."

Family members began reading the names of 2,983 victims - 2,977 killed in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001, and six killed in the first terror attack on the trade center, a truck bomb in 1993.

1. The glass is probably doing more to protect Shrub than Obama.
Then again, you never know how many wing-nuts are attending.

6. If you insist on making this about Pub v. Dem, I'm guessing most of the victims voted Republican.
New York's first responders are a majority Republican and I'm guessing the same is true of many who worked in the brokerage firms, banks and similar firms at the World Trade Center.

8. DLC has been advising Democrats to put more emphasis on their respective religions.
Will probably backfire.

Don't know why Democrats should strive to more like the less popular party.

4. I wish the U.S. would quit propagandizing the deaths of those poor people.
Actions speak louder than words and we have shamed many of their memories.
Those victims deserve a real investigation into 9/11. All material the government
has in it's possession needs to be disclosed to the public now. The government
needs to fund the health care for now sick or dying first responders and others
who worked at the Tower site. The U.S. fell right into the hands of Bin Laden by
pulling a Goliath and over extending itself in the desert. Now the giant is off balance
Bin Laden is still winning. Even after he has supposedly died. Everyone is a loser in
this ongoing theater. The victims, the 9/11 families, the American people, and the
innocent Iraqis, Afghans, and Pakistani's that have gotten caught up in the 9/11
debacle. America can do better than this. The only people benefitting from all this
madness are people involved with the Military Industrial Complex. The MIC is the
true parasite that is sucking the life out of America.

5. America, I cried and mourned with you after 9/11
and then watched in horror, as your beady red eyes, darted around, looking for something to attack.

7. Everyone who died that day was a victim, but only those attempting rescues were heroes.
Edited on Mon Sep-12-11 01:33 AM by No Elephants
Please don't misunderstand. I have as sympathy for everyone who died or was injured that day, as well as for their loved ones. But they were not all heroes, anymore than everyone who gets hit by a car on the way to work is a hero.

I don't know if what we are doing about those deaths ten years is healthy for anyone, including survivors who lost a loved one. Maybe especially for the survivors who lost a loved one.
