President Obama: Thanks 'our extraordinary 9/11 generation'
Edited on Sat Sep-10-11 07:08 AM by cal04
Source: The Hill

President Obama used his weekly radio address to mark the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks and sought to reinforce the successful efforts to fight terrorism under his administration.

"We’re remembering the lives we lost — nearly 3,000 innocent men, women and children — we’re reaffirming our commitment to always keep faith with their families," the president said. "We’re honoring the heroism of first responders who risked their lives — and gave their lives — to save others. And we’re giving thanks to all who serve on our behalf, especially our troops and military families — our extraordinary 9/11 generation."

While pointing out that America must stay "strong and confident in the face of any threat," Obama said U.S. forces al Qaeda are winning the fight against al Qaeda.

"Thanks to the tireless efforts of our military personnel and our intelligence, law enforcement and homeland security professionals—there should be no doubt: Today, America is stronger and al Qaeda is on the path to defeat," he said.

If it weren't for their tireless efforts, both in the field and on Capitol Hill, all of these wars would have probably been over long ago.

Only whispered in places like the "9/11 Dungeon." Meanwhile...hoist that flag and march and remember that everyone is now the "9/11 Generation" and don't ever forget it. Every year we will remember the HooRAY! and not what caused it and what it unleashed.

But many of us simply refuse to embrace the fantasy world perpetuated by politicians and the corporate owned media establishment. If we ALL become 'sheeple', what little remains of our democracy will vanish into thin air.

14. "Today, America is stronger "
That simply isn't true on any concievable level. We are more deeply divided against each other than at any time in my life, and I am about to turn 62. Our economy is shot to hell in a handcart and the Republicans are - with collusion and cowardice of a number of dems - blithely making it worse. If the United States were a person, I would say it is in a serious psychological depression to match it's economic one.

But more, our civil rights at home are eroding in ways too numerous to mention as we continue to violate international human rights. What we have seen over the last 10 years is a uniqely American variant of Shock Doctrine ennacted at home.

"Efforts to fight terrorism"? For me, The only way to honor those who died and to honor the community-oriented effort and sacrifice of the first responders and ethical and moral impulse underlying why so many initially served in Iraq and Afghanistan ( a conscientious objector, I can still support and respect the impulse underlying the choice I oppose), is to work for peace and justice at home and abroad.

You want to honor the first responders. Okay, start by backing their Unions. Funny how the "heroes of 9/11" are "the greedy union bastards" today.

You want to honor our men and women in the military. Okay, start by bringing them all home, providing real medical coverage, instituting a real 21st century GI Bill. You want to remember those who died on 9/11, look at and change the corporatist foreign policies - going way back to, let's arbitrarily say 1953 and the destabilization of Guatemala and then Iran - that created 9/11.

You won't get it, but until you at least try, the rest is just blowing smoke up our ass.

24. Thank you. I'm 60, and I've had a mural of Big Brother's eyes painted
on the walls of my classroom to remind ME that we no longer live in even a pretense of a free country, and that all that Orwell warned about has happened.

Perspective: nearly 3,000 people died that day.

Every week, week in, week out, 1,000 people in this country are killed by drunk drivers. 52,000 a year - that means more than HALF A MILLION since 9/11. Meh, who cares? Break out the flags and ignore the sickness of the first responders who are being swept under the rug.

And yes, American exceptionalism continues to create blowback globally. But hey, as long as KBR et al get rich, who cares??

that makes sense. My congressman no longer takes my calls or answers my emails or letters, because he's tired of me, and he's Bush's old accountant in Arbusto Petroleum.

I have three grown children, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, and I never dreamed about the shit we're neck-deep in for the sake of corporate profits.

The Bush/Obama Iraq war has killed more US people and countless more Iraqi civilians (who no doubt "hate our freedom"...) than bin Laden's people did on 9/11.

25. Because those remembering the day are forgetting the living responders
who are dying without coverage, without care, without dignity.

But yes, break out a 99 cent flag made in China and wave it like crazy! Because if not this year, some year, someone is going to start keeping track of those who don't.

Memorial services are cheap and easy, hence popular. Solving problems is difficult and costs money, hence unpopular, and especially in a country like the US, which never been noted for introspection, but rather for force and lots of it.

34. Not very old, are you? Wait. Really pay attention.
The responders who are dying have been purposely excluded from any and all events. They'll all be dead soon, so they won't be anything much for much longer. Their inconvenient presence can be safely ignored.

Don't need them bringing a down to all the testosterone on display, do we?

The Patriot Act was our surrender document and the end of this country.

So wave, wave, wave like crazy! See? You're already itching to report me to somebody.

<..> In remembrance in NYC
In New York City, hundreds of families, friends and strangers ringing lower Manhattan clasped hands as a bell clanged at 8:46 a.m. to signify the time the first hijacked plane crashed into the World Trade Center's North Tower. It was one of several public and private events scheduled around the city, including a free performance by the New York Philharmonic and a memorial by Fire Department of New York for its 343 members who died on 9/11 and those who have died from illness after working at ground zero.

21. 9/11 Generation?
I thought I was in the Pepsi Generation...

Joke aside, I refuse to be defined by an event that merely transpired during my life. The problem then was the 99% of the population who accepted the narrative and the authority of the state to 'do something about it'. I originally 'discovered' DU during that time. I was feeling very lonely watching everyone else on that bandwagon. It was good to find others who were in the same boat.

The only good thing to come out of 2000-2001 were some awesome websites formed to protest the election and provide a safe harbor for those not blinded by the games played after 9/11. Glad to see so many are still going strong.

what is horrific is that over 3000 citizens of the world had to die that day because of oil and religion.
