San Jose Mercury NewsThe Powell Street BART station is closed and police have started arresting protesters in the latest evening-hour commute demonstration against the transit agency.
The station closed around 5:30 p.m. after protesters and media outside the fare gates were given a warning by police to disperse or be arrested. As police prepared to arrest them, several protesters chanted "No justice, no BART!", and someone threw a beer bottle that landed and shattered on an empty escalator.
A group of San Francisco State students who said they were documenting the event for an online journalism course were detained by police, as were some film crews on hand for local television coverage. Police pulled protesters out of the crowd individually and took them somewhere inside the station to process them.
BART still has not announced when the station will be reopened.
