Rick Perry's execution record greeted by wild applause from Republicans
The execution of 234 people during Rick Perry's tenure as the governor of Texas was loudly applauded by Republicans during a debate to choose America's next presidential candidate.

Brian Williams, who was hosting the debate between candidates for next year's Republican nomination, asked Mr Perry whether he felt guilty about possibly sending an innocent person to their death.

The Texas governor said: "No, sir. I've never struggled with that at all. The state of Texas has a very thoughtful, a very clear process in place of which, when someone commits the most heinous of crimes against our citizens, they get a fair hearing."

He also added: "In the state of Texas, if you come into our state and you kill one of our children, you kill a police officer, you're involved with another crime and you kill one of our citizens, you will face the ultimate justice in the state of Texas, and that is, you will be executed."

4. His callousness parallels Bush's: more wars?
Remember how easily Bush got us into two wars? He also, before Perry, had set a record in the number of executions. I think that a callousness about administering the death penalty may parallel a callousness about getting us into war. Another concern we should have about Rick Perry.

6. where Brian Williams totally failed - He didn't follow up and ask
W2 how he feels about the fact that the Texas murder rate is higher than
many states who don't have the death penalty. Or, that he DID
execute an innocent man already (Willingham)

9. Softballs only
To be a moderator at a repig "debate", you are required to have a solid GOP voting record, your questions must be vetted by Roger Ailes, and you must allow hidden radios & earphones.

To be a moderator at a Democratic debate, you must belittle any candidate who isn't a corporate Dem, and not allow him/her to get a word in edgewise.

8. I initially thought MSNBC must have added an applause track
following that remark. No way Americans of any stripe would applaud executions. I was shocked. I quickly found out rabid tea party republicans are not human. Scary.

16. And the obvious result of this is
a higher murder rate.

If someone kills someone else, and thinks he'll be caught, and KNOWS he'll be executed if caught, he has nothing to lose by killing any number of people who could implicate him in the first murder. Kill enough witnesses, and there can't be a trial. And if he kills one or a dozen, they can only execute him once. Result: higher murder rate.

If the police are coming after him, and he's facing execution if arrested, he has no reason NOT to shoot it out rather than surrender - he just might escape in the chaos, and if not, going down in a hail of bullets may just be preferable to 12 years on death row, followed by lethal injection. Result: higher murder rate.

If a bad guy is sticking up a 7-11 and somebody pulls a CC on him, and he shoots back and kills him, he is facing the death penalty. Every person in the store could ID him, so he herds them into the back and shoots them all, then takes the surveillance tape (or disk, or chip, whatever), to avoid being identified. Result: higher murder rate.

Is that REALLY so hard to comprehend?
