WLTZ TV"We gather to protest the Beason-Hammon act known as HB56, Alabama's harsh new anti-immigrant and anti-civil rights law," said Jennifer Brooks with the Auburn Ministerial Association. "We consider the bill to be ethically wrong, unconstitutional, not to mention a waste of our resources and time," said Brooks.
"Last night was democracy in action. When you look at it, you had a group of people who gathered at the corner of two major roads, peacefully," said City Manager Charlie Duggan.
Members of the Standing on the Side of Love Alliance, Auburn Ministerial Association, and other local citizens voiced their concerns against what officials are calling the toughest immigration law in the nation. "I think it's important for city council members to hear our views, and we would like them to join us publicly opposing HB56," said Brooks.
The group presented council with several resolutions to repeal the immigration law. Brooks says their resolution is similar to the one adopted by the Birmingham city council, who voted unanimously to condemn the immigration law. "This group felt strongly about how the impacts of the legislation would have on them, their churches, works, and as far as what aid they can provide," said Duggan.
