Ohio Senate gave pay raises after state cuts

COLUMBUS, Ohio - State records show staffers for both Republicans and Democrats in the Ohio Senate got pay raises this summer in the aftermath of state budget cuts and the passage of a law limiting public employee unions.

Payroll data reviewed by The Associated Press show 19 Senate caucus employees got pay hikes since July. The raises were first reported Tuesday on the liberal political blog Plunderbund.

Republican Senate President Tom Niehaus says he ordered a pay review in December after experienced staff members began leaving during the transition of administrations. He says he was looking to see if he could make pay for experienced employees more competitive so the Senate could retain their expertise.

Niehaus says raises didn't require a budget increase in the Senate.

1. When the cons said they wanted government to be run like a business
this is what they meant.

14. well said, have you read David Sirota's book "Hostile Takeover"?
Sirota has been a substitute host for Thom Hartmann. I found this book at the library. Sirota gives examples of corporations screwing over workers' pensions while handing off golden parachutes. And now I see rethuglican governments doing the same damn thing despite appealing to the average Joe and Jane. Everybody in Ohio say it loud: "WE WANT OUR MONEY BACK!" And please, get out and vote for progressive Democrats in state legislatures, Congress, and the White House in 2012.

17. it was pubbed in 2006, and it has early looks at some currently familiar names
like Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and John Boehner!

Oh, Google has (most of) it as an E-book!

6. They are not Patriots! So obvious.
I think most Republicans are willing to make the United States a third world country in order to pad their pockets then move to another country.

So obvious!

8. And these bastards have the gall to expect other state employees
to give up their collective bargaining rights. They have the nerve to tell local governments and other state-funded agencies to make do with less.

And they flippantly take us for idiots by saying the legislative pay hikes required no budget increases.

What will it take to get the people to break out the ropes, pitchforks, torches, tar and feathers to teach a few of these bastards a lesson?

10. Hey, if pay increases can help retain experienced, valuable employees ...
... in the Senate, maybe you could try them out for other public-sector workers too. Just think how much better your state could function if you paid people adequate wages.

11. Voinovich cut welfare benefits, raised pay of Dept. heads
one of his first acts as governor of Ohio. Repugs have a track record of stealing from the poor, giving more to the rich.
