Libyan fighters say Gadhafi surrounded

Spokesman: He can't get out

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — Libyan fighters have surrounded the ousted dictator Moammar Gadhafi, and it is only a matter of time until he is captured or killed, a spokesman for Tripoli's new military council said Wednesday.

Anis Sharif would not say where Gadhafi had been found, but said he was still in Libya and had been tracked using high technology and human intelligence. Gadhafi is trapped within a 40-mile- (60 kilometer-) radius area surrounded by rebels, he said.

"He can't get out," said Sharif, who added the former rebels are preparing to either detain him or kill him.

Locating Gadhafi would help seal the new rulers' hold on the country. The announcement came after convoys of Gadhafi loyalists, including his security chief, fled across the Sahara into Niger in a move that Libya's former rebels hoped could help lead to the surrender of his last strongholds...

2. They really...
...should wait for his head to be delivered on a silver platter before making such bombastic proclamations.

One would think they would have learned that by now.

Gaddafi's spokesman, Moussa Ibrahim, has been channeling him for a long time. :)

13. Oh yes, It is going to be so wonderful for Libya now
Once we install our puppet dictator and secure all of the loans from the IMF for ALL of the reconstruction that must be done. Oh don't mind us coming in and dividing up all of your oil assets to our favorite companies, you know, the ones that fund NATO and so on and so forth. Democracy and all, is coming to a town near you.

What say you? Libya has the lowest national debt of all the countries listed???

The living standards of Libyans have improved significantly since the 1970s, ranking the country among the highest in Africa. Urbanization, developmental projects, and high oil revenues have enabled the Libyan government to elevate its people's living standards. The social and economic status of women and children has particularly improved. Various subsidized or free services (health, education, housing, and basic foodstuffs) have ensured basic necessities. The low percentage of people without access to safe water (3 percent), health services (0 percent) and sanitation (2 percent), and a relatively high life expectancy (70.2 years) in 1998 indicate the improved living standards. Adequate health care and subsidized foodstuffs have sharply reduced infant mortality, from 105 per 1,000 live births in 1970 to 20 per 1,000 live births in 1998. The government also subsidizes education, which is compulsory and free between the ages of 6 and 15. The expansion of educational facilities has elevated the literacy rate (78.1 in 1998). There are universities in Tripoli, Benghazi, Marsa el-Brega, Misurata, Sebha, and Tobruq. Despite its successes, the educational system has failed to train adequate numbers of professionals, resulting in Libya's dependency on foreign teachers, doctors, and scientists.

Many direct and indirect subsidies and free services have helped raise the economic status of low-income families, a policy which has prevented extreme poverty. As part of its socialist model of economic development,

GDP per Capita (US$)
Country 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000
Libya N/A 6,700 6,700 7,900 8,900
United States 28,600 30,200 31,500 33,900 36,200
Egypt 2,900 4,400 2,850 3,000 3,600
Algeria 4,000 4,000 4,600 4,700 5,500

the Libyan government has weakened the private sector and confined it to mainly small-scale businesses. While this policy has damaged the Libyan economy significantly, it has also prevented the accumulation of wealth by a small percentage of the population. While the ruling elite (i.e., top civil servants, military officers, and politicians), enjoys much higher living standards compared to average Libyans, and corruption exists within its ranks, Libya is not a highly polarized society divided between extremes of wealth and poverty.

There is another side to be told other than the one told by the western media:

Libya: NATO’s war lies worse than Iraq war lies

By Thomas C. Mountain

8th Aug 2011: ASMARA, Eritrea – The lies used to justify the NATO war against Libya have surpassed those created to justify the invasion of Iraq. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch both had honest observers on the ground for months following the rebellion in eastern Libya and both have repudiated every major charge used to justify the NATO war on Libya.

According to the Amnesty observer, who is fluent in Arabic, there is not one confirmed instance of rape by the pro-Gadaffi fighters, not even a doctor who knew of one. All the Viagra mass rape stories were fabrications.

Amnesty could not verify a single “African mercenary” fighting for Gaddafi story, and the highly charged international satellite television accounts of African mercenaries raping women that were used to panic much of the eastern Libyan population into fleeing their homes were fabrications.

There were no confirmed accounts of helicopter gunships attacking civilians and no jet fighters bombing people, which completely invalidates any justification for the No-Fly Zone in Security Council resolution used as an excuse for NATO to launch its attacks on Libya.

After three months on the ground in rebel-controlled territory, the Amnesty investigator could only confirm 110 deaths in Benghazi which included Gaddafi supporters. Only 110 dead in Benghazi! Wait a minute! We were told thousands had died there, ten thousand even. No, only 110 lost their lives including pro-government people.

20. I am not spamming
I am saying that the US (read NATO) did not like how things were happening in Libya. So they will be installing a government of their choosing that will roll the way they like. They didn't spend all that money for nothing. Don't be naive.

15. Related but too old for LBN: Libyan army convoys flee across Sahara carrying looted cash and gold
Muammar Gaddafi's location still unknown despite rumours of asylum in Burkina Faso

David Smith in Boshtata, Libya
guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 6 September 2011 20.39 BST

The hunt for Muammar Gaddafi has widened across Africa after Libyan army convoys crossed hundreds of miles of desert into neighbouring Niger, rumoured to be bound for Burkina Faso.

Tantalising clues of a possible escape route for Gaddafi filled the void created by the disappearance of the ousted leader whose face was ubiquitous in Libya for more than 40 years.

Reports of multiple convoys fleeing to Niger with looted gold and cash also suggested that the will of regime loyalists was failing and their last pockets of resistance in Libya could be near collapse.

Details of the size of the convoys, and who was in them, were scarce as they made their way across the vast swath of Sahara with more than 1,000 miles between any populated areas on the two sides of the border.

But military sources from France and Niger told Reuters that a convoy of between 200 and 250 vehicles from Libya was escorted to the northern city of Agadez by the Nigerien army. Amid speculation about a possible South African-brokered deal to allow Gaddafi to go free, there were rumours he might join the convoy en route to neighbouring Burkina Faso, which has offered him asylum.
