Katia Strengthens to Category 3 Major Hurricane

MIAMI | Mon Sep 5, 2011 5:02pm EDT

(Reuters) - Hurricane Katia strengthened to a Category 3 storm on Monday, carrying winds of 115 miles per hour (185 km per hour) as it tracked northwestwards on a path between Bermuda and the Caribbean, the National Hurricane Center said.

Katia was now a "major" hurricane on the five-category Saffir-Simpson scale of intensity. Forecasters expect the hurricane to veer away from the east coast later this week and then head northeastwards out to the open sea.

1. Rick Scott must be breathing a sign of relief.
I don't think he would be up to the job of handling a disaster not of his making.

7. Now category 1 and reduced to swells and rip currents could reach the US
Edited on Wed Sep-07-11 05:02 AM by dipsydoodle
Hurricane Katia, the category two Atlantic storm, is not expected to make landfall in the US, forecasters say.

The forecast offers some relief to the US after a host of states were battered by storms Irene and Lee.

However, gusty winds and large waves may affect Bermuda, the US National Hurricane Center said. The island is on tropical storm watch.

Katia is more 335 miles (540km) offshore, but swells and rip currents could reach the east coast of the US.

8. Thanks for the update.
There have been more twists and turns in Katia's story than I'd expected.
