Obama to spend Labor Day at Detroit AFL-CIO rally
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) —"President Barack Obama is celebrating Labor Day in Detroit, previewing his ideas for job creation and economic growth at a rally with thousands of supportive labor union members.

Obama's speech at an annual event sponsored by the Metropolitan Detroit AFL-CIO was serving as a dress rehearsal for the jobs address he'll deliver to a joint session of Congress on Thursday night."

1. Excellent. And the stupid rethugs gave him an extra day to prepare.
Once again, shot themselves in the foot.

2. I wonder if he will mention all those job-killing free trade agreements he is pushing?
I guess he suddenly found his walking shoes? He seems to be paling around with Unions members again. Or maybe he will merely say what they want to hear to get their votes?

13. I know we religiously practice hyperspeculation here...
but why are you SURE that they are job killing when Obama and other dems have been clear they want provisions in the treaty to prevent this?

17. Frankly, I find it quite ironic that
this Labor Day speech is and the upcoming jobs whatever are occuring in the same week as the negotiations in Chicago are taking place. I even find it more amazing that labor is still bothering to listen to him.

19. The usual hyperspeculation and irrational negativity...
towards Obama here at DU...it's getting old http://theobamadiary.com/2011/09/04/you-can-never-see-t...

And Obama is so bad for Unions http://www.alternet.org/story/152250/obama_nlrb_overturns_bush-era_decisions,_protects_union_rights,_allows_nursing_home_workers_to_organize/

It goes on, good Obama news gets ignored here...I wonder why? hahaha!

3. The Unions
Are ticked...Obama doesn't look to be a peoples' people....he ignores them. In their mind that is..

I think it is like every obstacle Obama faces...dinos and all the bootlickers want cheap labor....or overseas
it goes...Obama just doesn't weld the big stick to make a difference.

8. My sentiments, too.
Being in Detroit for Labor Day is like becoming a team fan only after they make the play-offs.

Where has this guy been during the last twelve months when organized labor was facing its biggest challenges in decades?

As for the speech this week ... zzzzzzzzzzzzz.

It will be same old, same old -- tinker around with the tax code; give businesses some more tax cuts; increase the deficit with more spending (while billions are wasted in Iraq and Afghanistan); and subsidized 're-training' the unemployed for other jobs that don't exist.

If he were bold he'd propose renegotiating trade treaties; impose a schedule for tariffs so that we start making TVs and washing machines and computers in this country again; tax the hell out of Wall Street fat cats; break-up the mega-banks; demand that Glass-Steagal be put back into law; and insist that Citizens United be overturned with a constitutional amendment if necessary.

Pres. Obama will be conciliatory towards the Repuglicans and teabaggers and be he'll be "reasonable" ... and nothing will happen of any significance.

Happy Labor Day, everyone!

Was that "after the play-offs" too? ;)

10. Pathetic. Utterly pathetic.
Wow. Who could have guessed that after every ounce of hard work was done, after some crushing defeats, that the President would all of a sudden find his solidarity with labor and unions when he was just starting the process of putting his hand out for campaign donations.

12. Bare Bones Obama
The Ds used to be the Party of scraps and bones, in contrast to the Scraped Plate Rs. Now, the hoi polloi get a bare bone - maybe - once in a while. And we're supposed to clap and cheer. And I have little expectation that our "leaders" (inc Pres Trumka, of whom I had some hope - gee, just like Obama) won't fall into line. After all, "where else can they go, what else can they do?" (That rumble you hear is Big Bill Haywood rolling in his grave.)

14. From the responses I am reading here
it is obvious that only a hand full of people in Detroit will show for this rally. What an embarrassment this is going to be for Obama.

for a nothing-speech to a population that's 1/4 what it was, thanks to NAFTA, union-busting, "free markets" etc.

23. will he be wearing his comfortable shoes?
I am still pissed he didn't show up in Wisconsin months ago.... but hey, Labor day is when the big Photo-Op is...

sorry so grumpy this morning... but I'm involved with some labor issues here at home and it's pissing me off. Unions are fine when you want publicity or to say that you stand for the little people...but the reality is that they are being decimated across the country by corporate interests...and there's no regulation stopping it.

24. What next? Earth Day with the Clean Air Society?
To be fair though, I will give him credit for saving car companies.

I just think the 'contracts' for wages and retirement for the executives should have been canceled when the workers wage and retirement contracts were canceled. The execs should have been left high and dry as their incompetence and theft were part of why the car companies went down.

Don't get me started on other anti labor things Obama has been involved in.......
