Christopher 'Dudus' Coke tells US court: 'I'm pleading guilty because I am'
Source: The Guardian

A Jamaican drug smuggler who unleashed a small war in Kingston last year in an attempt to avoid extradition to the US is facing more than 20 years in prison after pleading guilty in a New York court to trafficking and violence.

Christopher "Dudus" Coke, 42, who was once regarded by many Jamaicans as the most powerful man in their country, admitted trafficking more than three tonnes of marijuana and 30lb (14kg) of cocaine to the US, and to ordering the stabbing of a marijuana dealer in New York.

"I'm pleading guilty because I am," said Coke, who faces up to 23 years in prison when he is sentenced in December.

The plea, which saved Coke from the possibility of a life sentence, was welcomed by political leaders in Jamaica. Some will be relieved that it does not require him to reveal the powerful political ties that enabled him to run his drug trafficking empire unhindered from the Tivoli Gardens neighbourhood of the capital, Kingston, until the government finally bowed to US pressure last year and sent the police and army in to arrest him.

4. Is that supposed to be a joke or something?
I see what appears to be a punchline, but I don't see how it applies to this situation. Total non-sequitor.
Let's put my favorite punchline to this story and see if it makes a funny joke: DAVID VITTER WEARING DIAPERS!

Was that funny?

5. I'll go out on a limb and infer that it's a reference to Michael Vick
and alluding to people who want to free convicts who murder kids or assassinate presidential candidates but believe Vick should be executed, after torture. You probably know these people, they are our neighbors who wear shirts that say "Dogs are people too!"

Don't get me wrong I love our sweet beagle no end and without thinking twice would put myself in danger to save her. But given time to consider things, I wouldn't endanger other "real" people for her.

6. Thanks for the explanation.
I knew it was a reference to Michael Vick. But, I admit I haven't been in the USA for months, and so I've missed the latest wave of outrage / controversy surrounding Michael Vick. I will say this: if that Jamaican bank robber can play pro football, he's golden. *sarcasm tag*

2. They left out the crossdressing ..

Jamaican drug Christopher "Dudus" Coke was arrested Tuesday, after a manhunt that left 70 dead in Kingston. He'll face charges today in Manhattan. Oh, and he had a pink wig and women's glasses in his car when he was arrested.

Are Jamaican gangsters bad men in floral prints? Today, the Times describes an obsession in Jamaican press with Dudus and his gang members' apparent predilection for dressing up like women. The Jamaican Observer's Chat! Magazine quoted a police source after Dudus' arrest:

We could not believe that the big don had a pink wig in his car! Pink! We were in shock," a police source told Chat! yesterday, between bouts of uncontrollable laughter. "We still in shock. Maybe that is why he was able to stay in hiding for so long, because people looking for a man but he was really a ‘woman!'

Earlier, police had said supspected gangsters were found dead wearing dresses, disguised as women, according to the Times.
