GOP governor urges Obama to reject proposed Keystone oil pipeline
By Andrew Restuccia - 08/31/11 11:07 AM ET

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman (R) urged President Obama on Wednesday to reject a pending permit application for a controversial pipeline that would carry Canadian oil sands through his state.

In a letter to Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Heineman stressed that he is not opposed to oil pipelines generally. But he blasted TransCanada’s proposed Keystone XL pipeline because it would cross part of Nebraska’s Ogallala Aquifer, which provides water for the state’s farmers and ranchers.

“Maintaining and protecting Nebraska’s water supply is very important to me and the residents of Nebraska,” Heineman said in the letter. “This resources is the lifeblood of Nebraska’s agriculture industry.”

Heineman’s letter lends a high-profile Republican voice to ongoing efforts by environmentalists, ranchers, public lands groups and many Democrats to scuttle the project, which would carry Canadian oil sands from Alberta to refineries on the Texas Gulf Coast.

6. Gov. Heineman was never a nut. He is looking out for Nebraska's interests, here--
Edited on Wed Aug-31-11 02:45 PM by TwilightGardener
the state sits on top of a tremendous resource that no Canadian piped oil can match. Edit to add: wonder why they don't re-route the pipeline to ensure maximum water safety?

7. Maybe now he'll listen.
There was no way he was going to listen to those professional lefties, but a Republican is a different story. However it happens is fine by me.

11. Does that make too much sense?
Or too little profit for whomever is gonna own and operate the pipeline?

13. (Gov. R-Ne) Heineman: Deny (Keystone) pipeline permit
Source: Omaha World Herald

By Joe Duggan and Paul Hammel

LINCOLN — Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman sent a letter to the president Wednesday asking the government to deny a permit for the Keystone XL oil pipeline, citing concerns over pollution of the state's largest aquifer.

The governor's letter to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton states that he is not opposed to pipelines in general.

“I am opposed to the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline route because it is directly over the Ogallala Aquifer,” the governor wrote.

TransCanada has been working to obtain government approval of a $7 billion pipeline to pump oil from Canada's tar-sands wellfields to refineries in Texas.

17. Which way is the wind blowing?
It is about time.
I think Gov Dave is just worried about getting votes for his next office. He is also distancing himself from John Brunning.

Hat's off to Jane Kleb and her work pounding away to fight the pipeline.
Gov Dave has no love for Jane. So it's all self promotion.

20. Kind Sir, Matt Kotch, Bend Over Because There Is A New Route Where You Can Shove Your Pipeline
This one is going to make you feel real good because it threatens no danger to any aquifer. Like I know how much you care (not).

If only you could be made to speak the truth, then your altruistic sounding "Partnership To Fuel America" would become "Partnership To Line Your Own Pockets". It's unfortunate for you that the real motivation behind the C of C has always been so transparent.

Sounds like Dave Heineman has saved the day, in spite of himself. I sure wish Obama was in our corner. His silence so far truly does speak volumes.

Did I just say all of that? Well, slap my face!

21. Having stood up for the environment, he will likely now earn the wrath of Obama, Geithner, & Immelt.
