Judge awards $1 million in Brett Elder wrongful death suit against Bay City, police

BAY CITY — A federal judge in Bay City has approved a $1 million settlement in the wrongful death suit filed by the family of Brett Elder, the Bay City teen who died after Bay City police used a Taser to subdue him.

A sad loss of a young life. I suspect better parenting would have prevented this.

4. IF all he did was "take a fighting stance" then most definitely wrong.
However, I have seen a fair bit of footage of cuffed individuals (even quite small) who needed multiple officers to subdue, so if he really was a threat to others, his tasing might well have been justified, despite the outcome.

I really do not have much sympathy for drunk (or otherwise voluntarily intoxicated) folk who are injured or even killed as a result of their actions.

If he stole the alcohol then he doubly contributed to his own death. If an adult served him, then the city can see about getting its money back from them.

2. I agree, had the parents of the police officer that tazed a handcuffed 15 year old boy
done a better job, the boy might still be a alive and the city would be one million dollars better off.
