North Korea subject to more sanctions by Canada

The Canadian government has enacted new sanctions against North Korea.

The Tories originally promised the measures last fall in response to the regime's involvement in the sinking of a South Korean navy ship in March 2010. Three experts from the Canadian Navy had joined the multinational team that investigated the incident, which concluded the warship was sunk by a torpedo.

The new round of sanctions bans all exports and imports to North Korea as well as all new investment in the country. It also bars the provision of financial services to North Korea and to persons in North Korea, though doesn't exclude personal remittances.

The sanctions also don't cover any humanitarian assistance or financial or other support provided by the Canadian government itself.
