The governor, seen here in an archive image, said up to six attackers had struck

Militants in Afghanistan have launched a gun and suicide bomb attack on the governor's compound in Parwan, witnesses and officials say.

Powerful explosions followed by bursts of gunfire were heard in the regional capital Charikar, an hour's drive north-west of Kabul, witnesses said.

The governor, Abdul Basir Salangi, told media from inside the compound that the assault was still under way.

Unconfirmed reports say as many as 16 people were killed and 29 injured.

1. When they can hit sites like this - what are we winning?
What has our 'training' & cooperation w/ afghan PTB gotten us?

That was pretty fuckin bold - & sends the message 'we can get to you'.

2. We weren't providing security for that governor. He has his own people.
And good for them, they fought back.

It's the TALIBAN....they're wishing everyone who doesn't want to be dragged, kicking and screaming, back to the 3rd Century A.D., a very Happy Ramadan.

Mohammad Asif, chief doctor at the Parwan provincial hospital, told Reuters most of the dead were "government employees".

Speaking to private TV channel Tolo News, the governor said that those inside the compound had fought back.

The governor's offices have come under attack on previous occasions.

The BBC's Quentin Sommerville says the region is usually relatively peaceful.

However, under-equipped police there have been struggling both to resist Taliban militants and a rising crime level.
