Cantor Opposes Extending Unemployment Benefits: We Need To Stop ‘Pumping Up’ Jobless Americans
Source: Think Progress

In response to today’s jobs report, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) declared that “unemployment is far too high” and that Congress “must push pro-growth policies to get back on track.” Noting Cantor’s apparent concern as “spot on,”, CNBC host Jim Kramer told Cantor that obviously, “you’re for extending unemployment benefits given the chaotic situation.” Cantor’s response? Nope, because “for too long in Washington now we’ve been worried about pumping up the stimulus moneys and pumping up unemployment benefits”.

.....................

CANTOR: Jim, the most important thing we can do for somebody who’s unemployed is to see if we can get them a job. I mean, that’s what needs to be the focus. For too long in Washington now we’ve been worried about pumping up the stimulus moneys and pumping up unemployment benefits and to a certain extent you have states for which you can get unemployment for almost two years and I think those people on unemployment benefits would rather have a job. So that’s where our focus needs to be.

KRAMER: I just want to be very, very clear, on a day when we have a good unemployment number, that’s terrific, but not a great one and you confirmed not a great one, you are not in favor and will go against the president’s wishes to extend those unemployment benefits?

CANTOR: What I have said all along, Jim, is if we’re going to spend money in Washington, we better start to make choices and we’ve got to set priorities. If we’re going to spend money, we better cut it somewhere else.

16. That's why Cantor wants a weak economy, if the government is taking in too much revenue from
increased employment and is thus able to create a surplus, the value of Treasuries will appreciate and Cantor will lose on his shorting treasuries investment.

He knows tax cuts for the rich doesn't translate to increased employment because supply isn't the problem, it's demand, the rich have plenty of money what they don't have enough of is paying customers to buy their products because too many Americans are out of work and simply don't have the income.

8. There are no words. I guess cantor can't see the relationship
between JOBS and unemployment. We need good jobs too....not minimum wage. Doesn't he realize many Americans have more than one job? Many American families have two income earners? Doesn't he realize Americans are working longer, much longer, hours? All of these are out of necessity.

"Mr. Cantor's own failed policies are responsible for the horrific job situation. Now he wants to further punish those who have been hurt the most by ten years of irresponsible Congressional behavior. THat's the difference between us and them. They want to further punish the neediest, while we want to fix the situation."

12. are these people that fucking idiological?
you cut unemployment benefits, less money will be spent, which means more people will be laid off, which will increase unemployment, leading to less consumer spending, leading to less jobs...and so on and so forth. Do the republicans not realize this?

The republicans ideology on the economy could be summarized into this "We are going to make you more wealthy by cutting your salary by 10%"

13. Yes Mr Snot-nose rich boy, if we're going to retain corprat welfare (spend money)
and retain welfare for the wealthiest, we have to cut spending from the backs of the poor, unemployed, seniors, children, and the sick to do so. Have I got that right? I think I do.

Mr. Superior snot-nosed smirk boy needs to be forced to join the ranks of those whose backs he advocates scraping off of to uphold tax-free living for the wealthy and corprats. Snivelling little bastard.

17. "Pro-growth Policies"
Unemployment benefits are a pro-growth policy but Cantor has other things in mind when he says that. The Great Recession was self-inflected and fueled in large measure by one of Cantor's ideas of a pro-growth policy and that is greater deregulation.

Today we have a report showing that home ownership has dropped to its lowest level since 1965, reflecting a sharp decline in the middle class. Cantor's trickle down ideas have been a massive failure yet his solution is more of the same. Only an idiot would think that a shrinking middle class is the answer to our current economic problems.
