Secret Service apprehends White House fence jumper

WASHINGTON (AP) — An unidentified man was in Secret Service custody Tuesday night after he climbed over the White House fence.

Spokesman Ed Donovan said the man was immediately taken into custody by Secret Service agents who guard the complex around the clock. The man had a backpack that Donovan said was being examined for possible explosive material.

A CNN news crew caught some of the drama on tape as it unfolded. Video showed agents leading the man, as they held his hands behind his back, across the North Lawn on the Pennsylvania Avenue side of the White House, where tourists gather to take photographs

A man has been detained by the Secret Service after jumping a fence at the White House Tuesday.

James Dirk Crudup, 41, scaled the fence on the north side of the White House between 7:30 and 8 p.m.

Crudup was quickly taken into custody after scaling the fence. A backpack Crudup was carrying was confiscated by Secret Service.

The contents of the backpack were investigated by Secret Service and D.C. Fire & EMS. Nothing hazardous was found.

Way back in the Bush the Smarter years, I was wandering around DC, drunk with no money to get home. I shared a bottle and chatted with a couple of homeless guys who were living on the Rotunda, which is basically a giant extension of the back yard of the White House. These two guys told me they'd been living there for years, but the Secret Service had just come by, telling them they had a week to clear out. I couldn't tell whether they were a couple or just a team, but their shared sadness was obvious.

"This is our home," one of them said to me emphatically.

Then they gave me directions to a great place nearby with a nice cushy wire mesh bench where I was less likely to get rolled--and I wasn't. I ran into them now and again over the years, usually right there in the same place or nearby, and we'd talk about the squirrels and the trees, but I never did ask what happened with the eviction. I guess Bill Clinton must have let them back. Or maybe they were too persistent to be kept away.

Anyway, the miniscule point I'm trying to make is that the President has plenty of neighbors nearby, some of them just as determined to stay there as he is.
