CNN Breaking: John Shalikashvili, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, dies
Edited on Sat Jul-23-11 03:20 PM by Dennis Donovan
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- Retired Army Gen. John Shalikashvili, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has died of complications from a stroke, his executive assistant, Rachel McLain, told CNN Saturday. He was 75.

Shalikashvili passed away Saturday at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, McLain said. He is survived by his wife, Joan, and their son, Brant.

Born in Poland in 1936, Shalikashvili became the first foreign-born chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1993. He held the post until his retirement in 1997, serving under former President Bill Clinton.

Prior to that, Shalikashvili was NATO's 10th supreme allied commander in Europe.

2. I just heard this, too, but local news isn't confirming it yet.
He suffered another stroke last Sat. and since then has been in intensive care at Madigan. I fear the report is true even though I've been able to find no confirmation. His condition was reported as "grave" on Thursday.

8. K&R. Very sad news.
He was one of the good guys... :patriot:

He was in the news recently because of his support for a repeal of "don't ask, don't tell," the ban of gays and lesbians serving openly in the U.S. military.

10. One should never wait...
The General was living in a nursing home in Dupont, Washington, just outside the gates of Fort Lewis, until his admission to Madigan. My brother and I had always meant to go and visit him, since we admired him and his progressive stances that were often at odds with prevailing military opinion.

We never did.

And now we never can.

One should never wait...

Rest In Peace, General. :patriot:

13. Presidential Medal of Freedom, Bronze Star, several other awards
One of only 3 foreign-born people to become a 4-Star General.

He deserves at least as much attention as Amy Winehouse!

Not that the media would give him that kind of respect, but we should.
