Top Nazi Rudolf Hess exhumed from 'pilgrimage' grave
Source: BBC News

The grave containing the remains of Hitler's deputy Rudolf Hess has been destroyed to end it being used as a pilgrimage site by neo-Nazis.

-snip-

A 2005 court order banning such gatherings had little effect so the church decided to terminate the family's lease on the grave as of October 2011.

A granddaughter of Hess objected to the decision, the paper reports. She filed a lawsuit in an attempt to prevent it going ahead, but was eventually persuaded by the parish council to drop the case and allow the exhumation to go ahead.

-snip-

(Hess's) remains will be cremated and then scattered at sea.

2. Yes and no.
While ending the 'hero pilgrimages' is probably a good thing, as these bad folks are cremated and scattered, they become myth, which means tangible, absolute proof of them and their actions ceases to exist as well. Not sure how I feel about that.

And fail to provide police protection to that area when these guys congregate.

8. He won't become "myth" any more...
...than a million other people in history books, and anyone stupid enough to be a Holocaust denier or say the Nazi regime or Hitler's rise to power was just misunderstood aren't going to turned around by being taken to see one dead man buried in the dirt.

10. Did you ever notice that you can tell somebody's intelligence
or lack there of, by writing?

Example- Lack of hitting the spacebar after a period is a sign of IQ lower than 90.

19. Wow - did we get a special visit from someone who isn't anti-Nazi?
If there's anything we could unite the whole of DU on, it would be being anti-Nazi. Hell, we could unite with Free Republic on that one (about the WW2 era Nazis, anyway).

17. He was "captured" because...
Edited on Thu Jul-21-11 09:48 AM by slor
he fully expected to return to Germany. Specifically he parachuted into Scotland in hopes to speak with the Duke of Hamilton. Hess knew Hitler would prefer the Brits as an ally to avoid any distractions for his war in the east and maybe even enlist their help. And there is new evidence that supports that Hitler knew of the flight, however at the time Hitler appeared embarrassed by it, and even suggested Hess's mental incompetence. I think people responding to you in a snarky manner are put-off by any appearance of sanitizing the Nazis. You said Hess wanted to "beg us to stop the war with Germany". But it was not for any noble reason as I have said, it was to avoid a 2 front war which would correctly frighten any military strategist. And your last statement in this post is just strange.

Germany as president?

Edited to say re: being bigoted. I am of German descent and I hate the Nazi's for what they stood and what they did to Germany.

24. I find it odd that neo-Nazi's would congregate at Hess'es grave.
Hitler had his entire staff arrested, declared the guy a traitor to Naziism and sent out orders to all German agents that he was to be shot on sight if he were spotted. Hess spent half the war locked up in Britain, and after the war was the only top Nazi official aquitted of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Winston Churchill himself publicly called Hess'es life conviction an "injustice", and the US, Britain, and France all tried to get the guy released from prison in the 1970's.

Hess certainly wasn't a nice guy (he edited Mein Kampf for Hitler, and helped to write some of the Nuremberg Laws), but of all the Nazi's these weirdos could idolize, it's strange that they would pick him.
