SURAT: Six persons, including four women, were killed and over 37 persons were hurt in a blast that occurred at around 3.20 am on Sunday in a four-storeyed diamond processing unit-cum-residential building at Mahadev Nagar in front of the police station at Varachha.
Heavy cranes pressed into service to remove the debris of the collapsed structure as many more are feared to be trapped inside. The casualty figure is likely to go up.
The injured have been rushed to the nearby Maskati Hospital. While three persons were declared brought dead, three died shortly after admission. Of the 37 injured, 19 had been discharged from the hospital while 18 were under treatment, sources in the hospital informed.
Police and other agencies, who rushed to the spot immediately after the incident, are yet to ascertain the cause of the blast. According to the police, the diamond polishing unit at the ground floor of the building had a heating equipment which might have exploded, However, other possibilities are not being ruled out.
