House votes to block same-sex marriages on military bases
Edited on Fri Jul-08-11 10:25 PM by alp227

Intent on delaying a new policy allowing gays to serve openly in the armed forces, the House voted Friday to prohibit military chaplains from performing same-sex marriages on the nation’s bases, regardless of state law.

In a 236 to 184 vote, the House attached the measure to the defense spending bill, one of several steps the Republican-controlled chamber has taken this year to delay President Obama’s new policy. Pentagon leaders have said they see no roadblocks to ending the 17-year ban, and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is likely to certify the change for midsummer after military training ends. Still, opposition is strong in the House.

Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kan.), sponsor of the amendment, said he wanted to ensure that “America’s military bases are not used to advance a narrow social agenda.”

The measure would block funds to train the Chaplain Corps on the new policy. Huelskamp said the intent was to prevent chaplains from performing same-sex marriages, especially on Navy bases.

Here's this year's archive of House votes. So the House has time to extend the PATRIOT Act, defund NPR, repeal ObamaCare/health care reform, and now banning same-sex marriages on military bases...everything except JOBS and THE ECONOMY.

It's amazing how the trivial jumps to the front of the line. Did I say "amazing"? I meant "fucking sad".

7. Jim Crow is stronger than ever...
especially since a majority of the people who were affected by Jim Crow laws have such a christian hatred for homosexuals.

9. Great Example Of How We Give Republicans A Free Pass!
DU is filled with posts attacking President Obama on his gay rights when his administration has been among the most progressive in history when it comes to gay rights. Yet, there is relative silence when the House Republicans tried to stop the repeal of DADT or when Republicans presidential candidates actively campaign to try to promote a constitutional amendment to stop prevent gay marriage.

Blame Democrats and Give Republicans a Free Pass. The corporate media narrative is strong and ongoing.

11. Thats what I am wondering.
After all congress is trying to order the chaplains which you would think would be crossing the line big time.

13. "especially on Navy bases" ??????????
:wtf: is that all about? Is the prospect of a gay marriage performed on a Navy base somehow viewed as worse than one performed on say, an Army base?

14. No, it's because the Navy pretty much has stopped enforcing DADT
Edited on Sat Jul-09-11 02:11 PM by haele
Except for a few cases where a CO has a vested interest, or for someone who would have gotten kicked out for misconduct whether he or she was gay or straight. Basically, DADT is an ancillary charge to be kicked out on, rather than a primary charge.
By April, the Navy was already requiring managers and supervisors to go through DADT repeal training, with a bit of sexual misconduct refresher training thrown in to make it clear what constitutes chargeable behavior.
As far as most of the Navy is concerned, sexual relations are not an issue so long as it's consenting adults acting in an appropriate manner (no PDAs), and otherwise not harmful to good order and discipline (predatory relationships or adultery is still a no-no if it affects work).
Basically, don't take it to work. Most of the time, that policy has worked since the mid-80's.

There's always going to be issues with the young folks who are unsure of their masculinity or femininity, and with people who think a power-trip relationship is acceptable or means true love, but that's true everywhere.

Once the military drifted away from all-male, the Navy has always had to be on the forefront of figuring out how to handle intense personal relationships - because when you're assigned to a ship, there's no where to go - you can't just take it off-base when you're in your third month out in the middle of the Pacific.

Haele

16. sounds stupid to me. Most marriages of military people are
performed off base by civilian churches and justices of the peace, just like civilians. Sounds to me like the are trying to preempt any rule that says that same sex marriage is legal on federal land, seeing it is becoming more so under the states authority. Nobody would be 'forcing' chaplains to perform any service. The republicans who are always yelling 'states' rights' are not wanting the states to have the rights to decide in this issue. They want to impose it from on high from the federal level. They are doing the same thing with medical marijuana and abortion rights.
