US House votes against aid for Libya's rebels
Source: BBC News

The US House of Representatives has voted to prevent the Pentagon from supplying weapons, training or advice to Libyan rebels.

The House voted to deny funding for direct help to the rebels although a proposal to stop US participation in Nato-led air strikes was defeated.

Correspondents say there is strong Congressional opposition to US involvement in the conflict.

Opponents say President Obama should have sought Congress's approval first.

1. Of Just Wars and unjust wars
Funny that congressmen/women were so open to allow billions of US taxpayers dollars for an illegal invasion of Iraq that added to US debt and social woes, yet are not willing to spend a smaller amount on a UN-backed conflict.

One wonders if this is why countries don't like democracy. You still get crazy results.

situation now is not the same as it was when BOTH Democrats and Republicans voted overwhelmingly in favor of the Iraq War Resolution.

Not taking any position on the vote, just pointing out that late 2002-early 2003 was much different than 2011.

Also wondering if war is ever just, especially when our impetus to go to war over injustice seems so selective, but I'll save that thought that for another day.

5. The siuation may be different
but the politicians probably knew what was coming. Are you saying that because there wasn't a debt crisis in 2002/03 (which there was) the congressmen/women would have allowed an illegal invasion of Iraq? Evne considering that there was not international/UN-backing?

At the very least now, the purpose of intervention in Libya is to prevent a massive massacre without troops on the ground and social effects of dead troops and strain on the military.

And besides, the bailouts were necessary. If the banks and financial institutions weren't bailed out, there wouldn't be an economy left.
