Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Appears, Stands Before Houston Crowd

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords made her first public appearance in front of a crowd since being shot in the head Jan. 8, rising from her wheelchair to hug and kiss her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, when he received the Spaceflight Medal.

Giffords, D-Ariz., entered, being pushed in a wheelchair, to a standing ovation from a crowd of hundreds at the awards ceremony auditorium at Space Center Houston, which is next to the Johnson Space Center.

Her hair was much shorter than in previously published photos. She was wearing glasses, a beige scarf, a light shirt, jeans and sneakers. She smiled and waved to the crowd.

Giffords and Kelly held hands for most of the event. She appeared to chat with people sitting around her, and laughed when the crew of the Space Shuttle Endeavour's last mission was introduced. Kelly commanded the mission, STS-134.

2. Geez does the first comment have to be fear?
It was the Johnson Space Center. She was safe there. And I'm sure Gabby and Mark aren't going to let the rest of their life be ruled by fear.

Go Gabby!

3. There are so many news stories which interest me, then I move on. Not this one.
I thank you and anyone else who posts these updates about Giffords. Tragedy doesn't even begin to describe what happened that day but her struggle to overcome her injuries not only serve a thousandfold those who may also be recovering from severe injuries or just regular folks like me.

You can never have too many sources of inspiration.

The Arizona congresswoman appeared alongside Mark Kelly, who received a Spaceflight Medal during an awards ceremony at Space Center Houston.

"Personally, I was not surprised at all," Giffords' spokesman C.J. Karamargin said. "For us it is clear the congresswoman's physical strength is improving as well as her cognitive and verbal abilities."

Giffords made her first visit back to her hometown of Tucson, Arizona earlier this month after spending six months

"When she came to Tucson she was in great spirits and has improved tremendously," Karamargin said. "She got together with staff (while in Tucson) and climbed a flight of 18 stairs at the home of a member of staff."
