Pelosi Blames Cantor’s Exit On Tax Cut Tantrum
Source: TPM

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) attributed Republicans' exit from deficit talks on their refusal to budge on tax cuts and said their intransigence on the issue threatened to derail a deal.

Pelosi and Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), the ranking member of the Budget Committee, said at a press conference that they were told of Cantor's exit only after they left a morning meeting at the White House on the debt ceiling vote.

"We left the meeting to find that Leader Cantor had walked out of the meetings....because Democrats want to raise taxes," Pelosi said. "Yes, we do want to remove tax subsidies from big oil, we want to remove tax breaks from corporations that send jobs overseas. That list goes on."

Van Hollen told reporters he was "disappointed" by Cantor's exit, saying the talks "had been proceeding well, although there is no doubt that there were some very difficult issues" that needed to be resolved.

3. I believe (and this is only my opinion) that Cantor never intended to bargain in good faith
in the first place and he only did this to try and position the republicans as not being the giant douchebags we all know most of them are.

4. The Democrats have to keep hammering home a variety of 'tax the rich' memes every day
They should go after them agian and again and again. The Laffer curve is a laugh, supply side economics is just trickle down tripe, and none of it ever worked.

7. I disagree with the raising taxes on the wealthy
Edited on Thu Jun-23-11 05:40 PM by cstanleytech
because I believe closing all of the loopholes and exceptions they currently use would be a better way to ensure they actually pay their taxes otherwise they will keep on shirking on paying taxes like GE does.
Without the loopholes there then the government will get the true amount they are owed thus probably omitting the need to raise taxes higher.
Now one tax I would like to see be brought back would be a inheritance tax though tiered and it doesnt kick in unless the estate is worth say 2 million or higher.

12. I believe in a different way
Lowering rates and closing loopholes is what the Tax Reform Act of 1986 did, and it really hosed the American people.

I want increased rates--leave the bottom rate where it is, double the top rate.

I want a set of loopholes designed to encourage positive economic activity.

And I want a special set of tax forms for anyone whose Line 22 income (Total Income) is over $500,000 (personal taxes) or whose corporate pre-deduction income is over $10 million--they will create a tax floor below which no one may go.

14. Tell it like it is, Nancy! And keep hammering. Don't let the R's get away with their meme,
"Cantor walked out b/c the Democrats want to raise taxes."

"Yes, we do want to end tax breaks for the richest Americans and corporations that send jobs overseas." Keep it simple.
