Parties clash over hearing on Muslim radicalization
Source: LAT

Reporting from Washington—

A congressional hearing on whether inmates are being radicalized in U.S. prisons erupted in bipartisan anger Wednesday, with Democrats charging Muslims were being unfairly targeted and the Republican committee chairman vowing to continue investigating what he views as threats to national security.

Rep. Peter T. King (R-N.Y.) has been the focus of months of criticism since the first hearing of his House Homeland Security Committee in March on the radicalization of U.S. Muslims.

Wednesday's second hearing centered on whether inmates in U.S. prisons are being radicalized by Muslim chaplains and others for future terrorism attacks.

Rep. Laura Richardson (D-Long Beach) said Latino, Asian and African American gang members often leave prison more violent — an argument she and her Democratic colleagues used to say the hearings unfairly singled out Muslims.

2. You really have to admire the right
So here they've been all these years being hard on crime, resulting in a burgeoning prison population, which - omg, who could have known? - is breaking state budgets throughout the country.

On top of that, they've created an ideal environment for the development of a radical Muslim movement.

Two crises for the price of one. Well done, rightwingers.

4. Obviously, this approach is only going to have one effect...
That's why policing the right people in the right manner is the only right way to go about it...

Then, when you leave it up to the "right," they seem to ignore this logic. They'd rather strong-arm, when it's proven to do nothing and only further infuriate certain people.

7. on the other hand
The GOP doesn't seem so eager to investigate violent white supremacy groups that have a high profile in prisons nationwide. Hmmmm.

9. Repubs in general (King in particular) love to scare us with the threat "they" pose.
"They" can be Muslim terrorists, illegal immigrants, gay couples, etc. As long as it keeps us worried about what "they" are going to get that we have rather than what King and his buddies have already taken to create the terrible inequality in our country.
