Coast Guard Responds to Report of Oil Near Venice

NEW ORLEANS -- The Coast Guard continues to respond to the report of an oily substance in Breton Sound near Venice. An HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft and crew from Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile, Ala., conducted an overflight assessment and located a sheen one mile by 200 yards in length near north Breton Island, Thursday. Oil Mop, one of the agencies responding, has deployed containment boom for shoreline protection along the island where various species of birds are located. Three barge boats and two workboats are currently on scene. There are no reports of shoreline impact. A sample of the oily substance has been collected and sent to a lab for analysis.
