West's anti-Syrian bid foiled at UNSC

Western powers have failed in their attempts to push through a UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution against Syria over an alleged crackdown on its opposition.

During a UNSC meeting, the US-sponsored draft was met with intense opposition by Russia and China, which maintained that they were unwilling to interfere in “internal state matters.”

Expressing discontent with the UNSC meeting in which the draft was proposed, Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said that his country maintained its earlier stance against the resolution, IRNA reported.

Brazil, India, South Africa and Lebanon also opposed the resolution, leaving the UNSC meeting soon after it began.

If an intervention is called for, then find other avenue of doing it without giving the green light for another occupation of Arab countries.

2. Wording was iffy in the March Libya Resolution

From 18th March this year :

Russia's envoy to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, said preparations for the vote were "not in line with the existing Security Council practices," but Russia did not veto the resolution, acting in accordance with basic UN principles, which urge protection of civilians.

Churkin said that another resolution, proposed by Russia on March 16 stressed the need of peace settlement in Libya, and expressed regret that some Security Council members preferred "forceful measures" to peace settlement.

He also said the original wording of the document was changed to the point where it did not correspond with the original concept.

"The text included clauses paving the way for a large-scale military intervention," he said.

It was obvious that neither Russia or China would fall for that stunt again. The fault here with failure of the proposed resolution on Syria lies with the travesty known as The Libyan Resolution : not with Russia or China.

Medvedev has been cowtowing to the West at every turn. Putin is bad, but at least he's a counterweight of sorts.

Chief among them is the U.S., which blocks important resolutions against Israeli outrages. Here a needed resolution against Syria is blocked.
