Joplin, Missouri (CNN) -- While rescuers scramble to dig out any remaining survivors from a weekend tornado that killed 116, residents in Joplin, Missouri, are bracing for the possibility of more tornadoes on Tuesday.

"There's no way to figure out how to pick up the pieces as is," Sarah Hale, a lifelong Joplin resident, said Tuesday. "We have to have faith the weather will change."

The National Weather Service warned there was a 45% chance of another tornado outbreak -- with the peak time between 4 p.m. and midnight Tuesday -- over a wide swath including parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Nebraska and Missouri.

Joplin is also in the area.

This tornado is already ranked as the ninth most deadly in US history. The death count is expected to rise.

Thanks to heroism of the St. John's Regional Medical Center staff, only 5 of the 183 patients there died as a result of the tornado. All those who perished had been in critical condition before the storm. Read here: Execute Condition Gray!

3. I added comments and a link about the St. John's Regional Medical Center staff
Without a doubt many more patients would have died there if these heroes had not intervened to save them.

4. thanks for the addition
The tornado here very nearly hit the hospital. On 15th Street. I remember thinking how awful that would have been.

I'm getting tired of all these disasters.

5. I am reminded of a story about the dogs that are used to find disaster survivors.
After a period of time, the dogs will get depressed if they find nobody alive. To rectify this, the handlers will get people to hide somewhere so that they can be found by the dogs. I've remembered this touching story for years.

We need this too. We mourn the dead but let's rejoice when survivors are found.

6. the number, frequency and strength of Tornadoes

will get worse. Not sure how much more powerful could get, but the frequency of powerful tornadoes will definitely bring more damage. Global warming is the #1 culprit behind this, and humans are directly behind global warming.
