Taliban: Mullah Omar alive and in Afghanistan

By HEIDI VOGT, Associated Press – 21 mins ago

KABUL, Afghanistan – The Taliban are denying a report in the Afghan press that Mullah Mohammad Omar has been killed in neighboring Pakistan, saying the leader of the insurgent group is alive and in Afghanistan.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told The Associated Press in a phone call Monday that the report is "absolutely wrong."

He said, "It's only propaganda and we completely deny these rumors. He is inside Afghanistan and he is busy directing military operations with his commanders."

Afghan news channel Tolo quoted an anonymous Afghan intelligence official as saying that Omar had been killed in Pakistan. Officials with the Afghan intelligence service contacted by the AP said they had no such reports. They spoke anonymously because they were not official spokesmen.

has the same unofficial status as the original report.

4. If he is still alive, I hope they generated lots of radio traffic being sure.

Not that I trust what the Taliban say any more than what the ISI says.

5. Other rumors in AFP version:

The comments came after one Afghan intelligence source said Omar had been killed by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency, while another claimed he had been missing for 11 days.

The first source, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, said that Omar had been killed on Friday, citing information received from sources within the Haqqani insurgent group, whose leaders are based in Pakistan.

"Based on ISI instruction through (former ISI chief) General Hamid Gul, Mullah Mohammad Omar was told to move from Quetta city of Pakistan to northern Waziristan," the source said.

"As Mullah Omar was being transported from Quetta to North Waziristan by the ISI, he was secretly killed by the ISI."

Also correct that Osama Bin Laden still swims with the fishies.

9. Mullah Omar was himself an ISI operative.....
He was completely unknown and no history of him can be tracked before he suddenly became the leader of Taliban (another creation of the ISI)

He never allowed pictures taken (for fear that people close to him in Pakistan would recognize him as a Pakistani military officer)

He disappeared as mysteriously as he appeared ... no writings, no tapes, no communications of any sort unlike Osama who released tapes and videos periodically.

One can conclude that he went back to his original army post in 2001.

If he is killed now, Pakistan is obviously saving face and showing aid-provoking behavior. It is also cute that the Pakistanis took him to the tribal areas to murder him (if true) rather than kill him in his backyard swimming pool in Islamabad.
