COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — Newt Gingrich is getting acquainted with straight-talking Iowans, who take their role as first-in-the-nation presidential vetters seriously.

Gingrich fielded several tough questions Friday from Iowans upset at his nuanced take on health-insurance mandates and his belief that the United States should not divide immigrant families by deporting parents.

The high-profile Republican presidential candidate is ending a three-day sweep through the state, home to the nation's first presidential test.

More than 120 people packed into a room at Tish's Restaurant to hear the former Speaker of the House, who in 1994 led the GOP takeover of Congress.
