Anonymous to Sony: it wasn't us
Source: Reuters

The Internet vigilante group Anonymous denied responsibility for a cyber-attack on Sony Corp's networks that exposed the personal data of more than 100 million video gamers.

"Let's be clear, we are legion, but it wasn't us. You are incompetent Sony," the group Anonymous said on its Blog (anonops.blogspot.com) on Thursday.

Anonymous is a grassroots cyber-vigilante group which in December launched attacks that temporarily shut down the sites of MasterCard Inc and Visa Inc using simple software tools freely available over the Internet.

1. Makes sense to me. When I read of this when it first
occurred, I didn't think that "Sony" fit the Anonymous criteria. They go after those who in someway go against the common good and community.

Like, the MC and Visa attach was for these organizations to decide their cardholders did not have the right to send donations to WikiLeaks.

25. Anonymous did target Sony
Because of geohotz, they brought PSN to it's knees and then backed off because of the user backlash. This new attack, they initially denied but after a text document titled "Anonymous" was revealed to have been left behind, they are now claiming it is rogue elemnts that did it and not the group as a whole.

...in order to try and place the blame for their stupidity elsewhere.

Once again demonstrating their incompetence.

10. Sony failed to provide.....
...an adequate defense as is required these days, against cyber attackers as they should have since they held and are responsible for the safe-keeping of the credit card information of their customers. They responded to the discovery of their incompetence in failing to do this by trying to blame Anonymous instead of themselves. Your last question should be self-evident.

- If not..........

"Never mind."

31. No we are not. You just have the inability to understand that sony isn't a person
and is required to maintain their own security.

If you leave your front door open and thieves come in and rob your home, do you blame the robbers or your own stupidity? Or do you believe that the whole world is honest and you couldn't believe that leaving your front door open would make you subject to theft?

Sony didn't employ proper security regarding their credit card accounts aka they left the door open to theft. And via their negligence, screwed over millions of account holders personal information.

If you are so naive to think that this is the fault of the hackers, then you really have zero knowledge of what is currently going on regarding internet security and the quite cyberwar that is taking place.

At the firm I work at, we are subject to daily attacks. Our IT team is constantly dealing with it. And we aren't in, what might be termed, a sensitive information field.

And, more over, if sony is so stupid not to properly police their own site against daily if not hourly intrusions, then this is what they get.

There will always be hackers, hell before there were hackers there were phone phreaks, and they are part of the playing field.

This very much a clear case were the victim is completely at fault.

once again sony is not a person.

38. I never said Sony was a peron, you are inventing a new, weaker argument for the purpose of
knocking it down. This is a logical fallacy known as a straw man.

sony is so stupid

Isn't stupid a human quality? Are you sure I am the one who has "the inability to understand that sony isn't a person?"

Ha! Just kidding. I know no DUer thinks corporations are people. But you should realize you are accusing me of doing what you seem to be doing.

If you leave your front door open and thieves come in and rob your home, do you blame the robbers or your own stupidity? Or do you believe that the whole world is honest and you couldn't believe that leaving your front door open would make you subject to theft?

If a woman wears revealing clothing, and is raped, who do you blame? What if a woman drinks too much, passes out at a frat party and is raped? Should some women be blamed for their rape?

I don't think so, because I don't blame the victim for the deeds of aggressors, even though people understand aggressors exist.

Once again, Sony is not a person, so Sony can not have human qualities.

11. Because these things are organized in central places, usually the same ones over and over.
Thousands of people don't just spontaneously feel like doing the exact same thing, at the exact same time, with the exact same tool, all apropos of nothing. The easy way to know would be to check those places.

What the fuck would this "spokesman" know? Anonymous is collection of trolls where the left hand doesn't even know what the right hand is doing. Somebody left an "anonymous, we are legion" calling card on the PSN servers, and they even take credit of the DOS attacks against Sony. Like I said, they are scum!

33. No one can, they are ANONYMOUS.
however, in the same vein, who can dispute their size? No one can.

So when someone states that anonymous has thousands of members, you refuting it carries the same weight of someone not knowing.

So in this case, both are correct and both are wrong.

41. Anyone can, including Sony.
I really doubt Anon did this, though. This has more of the look and feel of an inside job wherein the actor pins the deed on a group already known to have bad blood with Sony.

And Sony seriously fucked up, here. I won't be getting a PS3 anytime soon because Sony is obviously unable to or unwilling to take security seriously.

29. I seem to recall somebody from anonymous a while back
stating that if anybody claimed to speak for anonymous then they were likely a liar since anonymous didn't have a spokesperson, admittedly that would make the person who said it a liar as well so a catch 22 i guess, but if he WAS telling the truth why should i believe them when somebody say they didn't do it?
