Wisconsin Union Battle Leads To Recall Campaign Tsunami

Wisconsin Democrats filed more than 2,500 signatures today to recall Republican State Senator Robert Cowles of Green Bay, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

It is the ninth petition filed in an unprecedented wave of recall campaigns that targets both Republicans and Democrats.

The recalls are widely seen as a referenda on Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker's anti-union law and a proxy for a national battle over public-sector unions. As outside interest groups pour money to both sides, the recalls are already on pace to set state campaign spending records.

So far, petitions have been filed to recall six Republicans and three target Democrats. Three recall committees targeting Democrats failed to collect enough signatures.

Agreed. 25,000 would be more like it.
And probably 25% more than they need at least.

3. yup check the source paper...
The Committee to Recall Cowles announced on its facebook page -- and the state Democratic Party confirmed in a news release -- that it had filed 26,000 signatures against Sen. Robert Cowles (R-Green Bay), 10,000 more than the 15,960 valid signatures needed to force a recall election.

4. Here in La Crosse we had over 20,000 signatures to recall Kapanke.
Senate districts cover a good sized area compared to state reps.

MADISON — Wisconsin Democrats have filed a recall petition against a sixth Republican state senator for his support of a bill that curtails collective bargaining rights.

Organizers for the committee to recall Sen. Robert Cowles of Allouez turned in approximately 26,000 signatures Thursday, far more than the 15,960 needed to trigger a recall election.

The Government Accountability Board has 31 days to review the signatures but has asked a circuit court to give it until June 3 to certify all recall petitions. Once the petitions are certified, officials would call an election for the first eight petitions on July 12. Reid Magney, a spokesperson for GAB, said any recall election for Cowles may need to be held separately from the other eight because of when organizers turned in the petition.

Volunteer Jonah Lenss, who turned in the signatures, said he joined the recall effort because he was unhappy with Cowles’ vote in support of a bill eliminating most collective bargaining rights for public employees. A judge has blocked the law from taking effect but said the Legislature can vote on the bill again at any time. .................

10. Exactly, had Democrats shown up at the polls in the same % as Republicans last fall,
Walker would never have been elected. He received 90% of the number of votes that went to McCain, but his Democratic opponent Barrett only got 60% of the voted that went to Obama. Governments are formed, law and policies are made as a result of those who choose to participate in the process, not those who choose to stay at home.
