EU approves possible military operation for Libya
Source: RIA

The European Council on Friday approved the decision to mount an EU military operation to support humanitarian efforts in Libya, if asked to do so by the United Nations.

"The EU will, if requested by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), conduct a military operation in...order to support humanitarian assistance in the region," the council statement read.

"The aim of the operation would be to contribute to the safe movement and evacuation of displaced persons and to support the humanitarian agencies in their activities with specific capabilities," it said.

EUFOR Libya can only be deployed if the council adopts another decision approving the force's terms of engagement, the statement added.

1. This is how it starts...
Edited on Fri Apr-01-11 03:08 PM by Javaman
first they go in "helping" the rebels, then they help the rebels "win". Then they tell the rebels whom they should "pick to rule". Then they tell the rebels how to run a "real election". Then the EU has their little puppet.

Same as it ever was. This is a page right out of 20th century colonialism.

Remember, these are NATO forces NOT UN.

2. You are right, sir, it would be so much better...
to allow Gaddafi to shell his opposition into submission and overrun them w/ superior firepower because clearly the rebels represent nothing more than proxies for 21 century imperialists, never mind many reports to the contrary.

accusations.

Not really a way to go through life.

I would suggest reading a little history on 20th century colonialism before you try your best to fling imaginary poop.

Cheers! :)

6. Not all events, sir, are best viewed through the lens of 20th century colonialism
Trying to stuff the square peg of this conflict into the round hole of 20th century lefist thought might cause one to support a brutal dictator instead of siding w/ a popular uprising.

:toast:

7. LOL
Right.

Keep believing that.

While this might have been a popular uprising, I can assure you this, it won't end that way. Get back to be in a few years when either the EU's or our own little puppet is fully installed and doing our bidding.

Honestly, no one is that politically naive, but then again, it appears as you are.

8. Give it a few months after western troops land
And Libyans from all sides will be doing their damnedest to kill them. All the Curveballs and Karzais in the world can say otherwise, but that's how it always goes.

4. Actually It Looks like the EU Wants to Do More Than they can do with NATO
Edited on Fri Apr-01-11 03:44 PM by AndyTiedye
We don't want to escalate our involvement in Libya and they do.

If it was really all about the oil, they'd just leave Qaddafi in power.
He's been quite happy to sell Europe all the oil they want.
