New Taser can strike suspect 100 feet away

By Stephanie Czekalinski

Columbus police have deployed a new shotgun-style stun gun that can hit targets up to 100 feet away.

The Taser X12 shoots wireless cartridges that travel about 1,000 feet per second, officials said. The projectiles are similar in size and shape to traditional shotgun shells

“It’s incredibly accurate,” said Sgt. Matt Weekley.

The projectile is barbed and flies prongs first. Once it strikes its target, the prongs attach to the body through clothing.

Not sure when that changed.

6. I don't actually recall
the manufacturers ever calling them "non-lethal", pretty sure that term is a fabrication of the media.

10. Should be less chance of current crossing the heart
Regular Tasers place the electrodes randomly, the shotgun style holds the electrodes a fixed distance apart. Assuming that the faster speed doesn't cause significant mechanical damage, if I had to get shot with one of these, I'd pick the X12.

28. Based on what evidence?
Quite a few videos have made it to youtube that show cops and security guards using tasers when there was clearly no need.

Those are just the rare times when a video camera was present and in use, and someone was able to get a hold of the video to put it online.

What makes you think that those represent just 1% of the times when tasers are used?

A lot of us think that tasers are being used abused far too often, because the people who carry them seem to think they are nifty "compliance assurance devices" they can use to force anyone and everyone to do whatever the hell they damned well feel like ordering their victim to do.

If you give someone a "compliance assurance device," anyone with an ounce of Bully in them is going to feel compelled to use it. The growing number of complaints seems to indicate that this is truly what happens.

31. Who is issuing the complaints?
The same idiots that put themselves into the position to have them used on them.

And no... some viral videos on the internet are not valid evidence to "prove" that this a widespread problem.

32. You seem very insistant that people are guilty until proven innocent.
You are obviously white. You're definitely not a member of a minority group.

Anyone with a minority background, or the least bit of knowledge of the kinds and levels of police abuse and brutality that members of every minority group have always commonly had to deal with because of biases in the criminal justice system would never be so naive and adamant that people who are attacked with tasers are always guilty. :eyes:

You are immunizing the guy holding the taser from ever being responsible for doing anything wrong. He's always innocent in your eyes, no matter what he does, or why he does it. That gives anyone a free pass to abuse people with that taser whenever, where ever, for any reason or whim, and always get away with it because if you're on the jury you'll never, ever convict anyone. You'll never believe that anyone with a taser is capable of abusing it, because anyone they taser must have deserved it, even if you have to imagine or rationalize a reason that doesn't exist. That's really sick and sad.

You clearly haven't paid any attention to the repeated class action lawsuits against Taser International. They have been repeatedly sued because 1) their products are more dangerous than they advertise, and because they advertising them as non-lethal instead of as less-lethal, and as compliance devices this 2) leads people to over-use them and use them frivolously.

Yes, youtube videos do become evidence when those videos start stacking up and there are a bunch of them. A small sample is a valid representation of a larger population. All of Statistics is based on that premise. If you couldn't ever draw any conclusions until you saw every real incident then there couldn't be any such thing as statistics.

You come across as an authoritarian personality type. The type who believes that cops are always correct just because they are cops. People with authority should be obeyed just because of their authority, or else. And you've already said several times that people who get hurt deserve it. That's fucked up. I hope you never end up on the other side of that attitude.

Do most burglary victims bring it on themselves by living in high crime areas?

You would be wrong on all counts, including your ridiculous assertion that 99% of taser victims are deserving of having often-enraged and/or out-of-control police nearly electrocute them.

20. Must have been designed by some Rethug who's making millions in Royaltys
and planning on using it at the next Democratic protest or gathering...maybe in WI. I've seen them (on TV) using them on victims who are already handcuffed. They use them for punishment, anger, revenge and retaliation. I don't trust police to just use them for situations that they were designed for.

23. I thought the "accepts ONLY less-lethal ammo" was interesting
The base of the Taser shells is shaped differently from the base of a regular shotgun shell. If the extractors can't close down around the base of the shell, the gun won't fire.

This of course in no way prohibits an ammo manufacturer from creating a "lethal" shotgun shell with the correct base to function in this gun. I know it's impolitic to say this on this board, but there are criminals out there that have to be killed to be stopped--and no one is going to want to carry two shotguns.

30. I know, an over under, one chambered for the Taser round, one for slugs!!
Just have to remember what trigger to pull. Ooops, just put another slug through an unarmed, wheelchair bound 87 yar old.

Seriously, I see X12 being only carried in the helmeted, visored, jack booted intimidation lines, fired from behind a wall of shields into a crowd to put someone, anyone on the ground so that they have someone to arrest. Otherwise, it is useless for exactly the reason you state, a shotgun is a heavy load to carry for normal day to day stuff.

33. Sounds like crowd control/protest control to me: ("barricade situations, riots, Molotov cocktails")
snip -

"Police will use the new stun guns in life-threatening situations where the use of force is justified, such as barricade situations, riots, when Molotov cocktails are thrown or when someone is threatening suicide with a knife, Weekley said.

Once a suspect is immobilized, officers can handcuff him or her without having to physically subdue him, he said."

Knock 'em down and drag 'em to the van first, ask questions later.
