Cantor: Government Shutdown Would Be On Democrats' Hands
Source: Wall Street Journal

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--House Republicans late Friday pushed back against a Senate Democrat's optimistic assessment about the progress of budget talks, and suggested that a government shutdown was possible amid an impasse over the size of spending cuts for the rest of fiscal 2011.

The drumbeat of criticisms, from House Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio) and the other top two Republicans in the House, appeared to reflect a breakdown in talks with the White House and Senate Democrats, and raised the stakes in budget negotiations that must be completed within two weeks if the government is to continue running.

A Senate Democratic aide said that the House Republican leader was forced to back down from a deal he had reached with Democrats under which he agreed to set spending cuts at tens of billions less than the $61 billion that Republicans had already driven through the House. A Boehner spokesman said that the description provided by the Senate Democratic aide was not accurate.

"After days of positive negotiations, with significant flexibility shown by the Speaker, the House Republican leadership is back to agonizing over whether to give in to right-wing demands that they abandon any compromise on their extreme cuts," said Sen. Charles Schumer (D., N.Y.) in a statement. "Instead of lashing out at Democrats in a kneejerk way, we hope House Republicans will finally stand up to the Tea Party and resume the negotiations that had seemed so full of promise."

So, there you have it. Even though it appears that Republicans can't get on the same page, it will be the Democrats fault if they refuse to sign on to the most extreme elements of the Republican party. Thank you corporate media for running a headline that is undermined by the substance of the story that follows.

Hey, perhaps the U.S. Chamber of Commerce can simultaneously run some sock puppet attacks from the "left" to blame Democrats while giving Republicans a free pass. It is a mighty fine luxury to control the media.

6. I hope you're right...
..but I wouldn't count on it. A friend of mine moved to South Carolina recently. He.s a very savvy guy, and retired from a government relations position here in Connecticut. I sent him these two Jim DeMint stories to kind of tweak him.

small god

ideology over people

Here's his response:

"The small newspaper here and TV made no mention of either issue that you brought up (no surprise). Religion here is dominant."

That kind of said it all for me. Folks in some of these red states just don't get the word. State-sponsored ignorance.

9. I don't mean the red states -- those places are forsaken -- but the swing states that now rage.
But I do think it would be worthwhile for Dems to get together a charity to help citizens of red states when it is needed, don't you?

Like for example, abortion funding programs.

11. What's really remarkable is that Eric doesn't actually want these cuts.
There is a reason they said they couldn't make 100 billion at the start. They didn't want to make these cuts because they actually do understand what's at stake, and who will be hurt.

But Boehner refuses to judge his peers' ethics, nor their sanity. It's his defining flaw as a leader.

13. Same tack they tried when Newt blew it...
worked out fine for them on that one...:D

Boehner has two things that he cannot overcome, he's incredibly lazy and he has absolutely no idea how to lead. Boehner, Cantor and Issa are the 3 most absurd personalities dancing in the halls of congress these days. Bachmann and Fox round out the top 5 lunkheads.

25. Yep, and the budget should have been passed in time for the OCTOBER 1
beginning of the fiscal year. BUT the year's only half over, and the obstructionist fucking Republicans show no ability to get it done.

Older folk in this neck of the woods are already recalling when Newt stopped up the Social Security, disability, and vets' payments.

27. They refuse to go near defense spending either...
That is where the most cuts could be made, but they are so beholding to contractors, they'll pile on cutting social programs that many people depend on. Corporations don't vote, people do if the cuts to education, libraries, safety, food, and a host of other programs wipe out local institutions, they will pay a huge price. The thing of it is, citizens consistently complain about government spending...but only in areas where they are not directly benefiting, cut "Meals on Wheels", people see seniors going hungry and the populace realizes just what these programs mean.

The mantra of the Reagan years about cutting taxes for corp's to create jobs is generally seen as an absurdity, the money stayed w/the corp's and jobs were created...overseas, where people work in slave-like conditions while American run out of unemployment insurance.Raising taxes to create revenue is not a bad idea...cutting them equates to an individual quitting his/her job thinking it's easier to pay bills without an income...it's just downright stupid.

18. Why is the headline wrong?
It's not making a judgement about who will be to blame, it's reporting what the Majority Leader of the House said.

31. Why just publish the Republicans' Attack On The President and Ignore...
...the fact that the article itself notes that Republicans are having trouble getting on the same page, because their most extreme elements would rather hurt the Country in order to score political points against President Obama. Instead, the headline simply recites the right wing talking point. That is the problem.

.... for any consequences of THEIR actions. The devil makes them do, well, everything, apparently.

Yeah, people are gonna believe that... since it will be the SECOND time the Government has shut down while Repugs were in control of the House.

(All any Dem has to do is ask "Why does this keep happening when they are in charge?")

24. Yes, of course it's the Democrats' fault.
I mean, they are refusing to give the Republicans 100% of what they want so naturally, instead of compromising, the Republicans have no option other than to pander to their most extreme base and shutdown the gov.
