"French military jets are preventing forces loyal to Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi from attacking the rebel-held city of Benghazi, French President Nicolas Sarkozy says.

A French plane has fired the first shots in Libya as enforcement of the UN-mandated no-fly zone begins. The target was a military vehicle, the French defence ministry said.

It came hours after Western and Arab leaders met in Paris to agree a course of action to confront Col Gaddafi.

2. I'm blown away that the stubborn old bastard won't quit
and enter a glorious retirement in an Italian villa, courtesy his best buddy Berlusconi.

6. Sarkozy and Cameron would have welcomed him also.
It's like their best buddy got caught in public, doing what they knew he was doing in private. They must be so angry with him for getting caught! :eyes:

I suppose they think that this will make people forget who armed him and entertained him and helped improve his image etc.

None of these brutal dictators would have lasted a year had it not been for the backing of these Western nations.

So often they then have to go in and 'deal' with them when they publicly show their true colors. Shame on France for ignoring the problems in favor of profits until it was shoved in the face of the world.

But, they have interests to protect now and that is what they are doing.

Meantime, the brutal government of Bahrain is mowing down its protesters, same thing in Yemen, but there will be no 'international' agreement to protect them. We are still BFF with both those brutal leaders.

3.  Many of Khadaffi's pilots and Air Force service people are contractors or
mercenaries...I wonder how many will stick with him now that there is a good chance they will be shot down or attacked. FWIW, less than 50% of his aircraft are flyable because of poor maintainance and lack of parts.
