Israel seeks $20 billion in US military aid
Source: Ynetnews

<snip>

"Defense Minister Barak said Israel might request an additional $20 billion in military assistance from the United States in order to prepare for possible threats, given the recent unrest in the Middle East.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal published Tuesday, Barak said that Israel should not fear regional changes or the risk of offering valiant concessions to the Palestinians.

"It's a historic earthquake...a movement in the right direction, quite inspired," Barak said, referring to revolts in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and the Gulf. "It's a movement of the Arab societies toward modernity."

"The issue of qualitative military aid for Israel becomes more essential for us, and I believe also more essential for you," Barak stressed. "It might be wise to invest another $20 billion to upgrade the security of Israel for the next generation or so....A strong, responsible Israel can become a stabilizer in such a turbulent region."

Current US military aid to Israel stands at more than $3 billion a year. Israel will have to increase its defense expenses in the long run despite there being no immediate threat, Barak said."

5. Israel may ask U.S. for $20 billion more in security aid, Israël Defense Minister Barak says
Source: Haaretz

Israel may request an addition $20 billion in military aid from the United States in light of the unrest sweeping the Arab world, Defense Minister Ehud Barak told The Wall Street Journal in an interview published Monday.

Barak deemed the changes in the region a "movement in the right direction", and said that in the long run, Israel should not fear the "movement of Arab societies toward modernity."

But in the more immediate future, he told the WSJ, Israel would have to contend with the fact that Iran and Syria "might be the last to feel the heat" and join the trend of unrest

10. Here's the key bit.
"It's a historic earthquake...a movement in the right direction, quite inspired," Barak said, referring to revolts in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and the Gulf. "It's a movement of the Arab societies toward modernity."
And he's afraid it's about to strike his living room next. News of revolt against murder and crimes against humanity elsewhere doesn't bode well for him.

Take your gold bricks and fly off to wherever old dictators go, Bibi.

16. How about we take that $20B and create jobs here.
They want our money so they can use their own cash to build more "settlements".

Just say no, Obama.

20. $20 billion is also about the estimated cost of repealing the ACA's 1099 reporting requirement.
Another possible use of that dough.

17. Will the Israeli gov use it for anything good? Or will they spend it to orchestrate violence?
I think we know the answers. The money will swell the (already swollen) coffers of the US / Israeli weapons complex and they'll use it to carry out new atrocities. Mind, I haven't even mentioned the huge deficits and the many ways that kind of money could be put to good use here.

18. I seem to recall that we offered them a few fighter jets last year to freeze building and
continue talks with the Palestinians. Perhaps we'll try something like that again?

At any rate, there should be some kind of price tag on our weapons. Despite what he says, a beefed up Israeli military is a lot more essential to them than it is to us.

19. I Support Israel
I have always been a defender of Israel - however, I will call them out when they are wrong. Being surrounded by enemies on all sides is not a great way to exist and sometimes it gets ugly. All sides in this equation have blood on their hands. To deny that Israel has been attacked many times over the last 50 years - for nothing more than existing - is willfully ignorant. For me to deny that they have overstepped on some occasions would also be willfully ignorant.

All that said - Screw them and their request for $20 billion. We need to stop subsidizing this country when our own people are starving and unable to afford healthcare.
