Thousands of anti-government demonstrators have gathered outside the headquarters of Bahrain's state television as protests continue in the Gulf nation.

Friday's demonstration comes a day after sectarian clashes between members of the country's Sunni and Shia communities.

Demonstrators converged on the television building outside Manama, the capital, chanting slogans against the Sunni dynasty that has ruled the majority Shia population for more than 200 years.

Protesters, who have been demonstrating for nearly three weeks, claim widespread discrimination against Shias by the government and have demanded a greater voice in the nation's affairs.

Sectarian violence flares in Bahrain

Fights between Shias and Sunnis in central Bahrain raised the spectre of sectarian violence ahead of large anti-government demonstrations planned for Friday afternoon.

As protests enter their third week with largely Shia demonstrators bedded down on Pearl roundabout in the capital, the street battles in Hamad Town on Thursday night marked the first escalation into inter-communal violence amid increasingly bitter rhetoric.

Sheikh Salman has returned from a tour of four neighbouring Gulf Arab states amid plans for the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council to fund a multi-billion-dollar Marshall-style plan in a bid to blunt unrest in Bahrain and Oman by increasing state spending.

Scores of people were involved in fights with knives, sticks and swords, witnesses said, as ambulances evacuated several of those injured in the clashes from the new-town south of Manama.

3. Bahraini protesters swarm state TV after clashes
MANANA, Bahrain — Thousands of anti-government demonstrators streamed toward the headquarters of Bahrain's state television Friday after sectarian clashes between Sunnis and the majority Shiites leading protests in the strategic Gulf nation.

The street fighting was brief, but it underscored the tensions building after nearly three weeks of unrest that has left the tiny island kingdom in a stalemate between the Sunni monarchy and Shiite-led demonstrators who claim widespread discrimination and demand a greater voice in the nation's affairs.

Demonstrators converged on Bahrain TV headquarters outside the capital, Manama, chanting slogans against the Sunni dynasty that has ruled for more than 200 years. Some women carried roses and placed them on the wall outside the TV compound.
