Rep. Nick Milroy tackled while trying to enter Capitol

Source: WKOW

MADISON (WKOW) -- Representative Nick Milroy (D-South Range) had a confrontation with Capitol police as he tried to enter the building Thursday night.

Milroy was trying to get clothes from his office but police would not let him into the building. They tackled him as he tried to get past officers guarding a door. He was able to get the door open and struggled with police before they took him to the ground.

If I understand correctly, these are Capitol Police, no State Patrol or Sheriff Deputies. So far, I haven't heard anything from the Capitol Police insofar as these protests go. I am sure they have been there the whole time, but I don't know where their allegiances lie.

74. A private duty security force has been hired to patrol the Capitol
so this may have been people new to the whole situation. It certainly doesn't sound like the Madison Police or the State Troopers, who have been very cool thus far. The Capitol Police work for the Department of Administration, and it could have been them.

75. To be very frank, their "allegiences" shouldn't lie anywhere. They should
enforce the law with an even handed view. That's not to say that they can't privately sympathize with the demonstrators. But that should never be apparent when they are on duty. If they can't do that, then they should seek different employment.

It seems like it should take a pretty extreme situation for a

To me, and I hope I am wrong, it seems like Mr. Milroy may have been drunk, and I definitely heard him shouting F-bombs. I'd like to think that nobody would be allowed in the Capitol if they are drunk and disorderly. I do hope I'm wrong, but this doesn't look like any kind of game-changer at the moment.

Folks here are too high strung. Maybe he wasn't drunk, but he was awfully belligerent. The police are public union workers, and I do believe they side with their best interests in general. Why was he tackled? Just because he is a Democrat? Maybe the cops were out of line, I can't tell exactly what happened here. Trust me, I have a lot riding on this as a union worker in Wisconsin, and a staunch Democrat. Just saw #99, both sides take blame, story over. I never said he was absolutely drunk OR in the wrong, but he was aggressive, as he admitted to.

33. Bullshit.
Odds are damn good that half the politicians entering that building are drunk half the time and the other half are probably drunk all the time. Capital cops are used to dealing with drunk politicians. Furthermore, suggesting he was drunk is an unsubstantiated allegation and if it turns out he was drunk he still had every right to enter that building so long as he was not bothering anyone without being harassed by Walker's Praetorian Guard. He is an elected representative of the people in a democratic republic. Isn't he? Most normal people tend to become disorderly when they're being unjustly fucked with, drunk or sober. His conduct was entirely appropriate.

Edited on Sat Mar-05-11 03:37 AM by thoughtcrime1984
I am a Wisconsin resident, a union member, and want Walker to disappear like yesterday, but I don't see why a cop would sack a Congressman for absolutely no reason. Milroy himself basically told the cop "no hard feelings" yesterday. I am a hardcore Democrat, but we can't jump and scream like wild monkeys at every little thing until we know the facts. Generally, if anyone starts shoving a cop, they do get dealt with roughly. I wish it was something we could use to bring down Walker, but I don't think there is anything to go on here. I just love how two people jump my opinion, I am a very vocal supporter of unions, Wisconsin, the Democratic Party, and civil rights. I am on your side. Just saw #99, Milroy admitted to being too aggressive, end of story. We'll find (and have found) plenty of shit to sink King Walker, without needing to blow this incident out of proportion.

..I hate to be the reasonable one here - but the Rep seemed a bit angry and confrontational. Not a good tact when dealing with the police.

I also agree with another poster that could have been drunk...why else would you attempt to push your way through a phalanx of cops?

Sorry folks...getting your clothes from your office is not a civil rights issue. I am sure that he had clothes elsewhere - this was either a drunk person or someone trying to make a scene.

85. There are a lot of work places where you have to show ID before you enter.
We don't see him doing this, do we? In fact, the only video we see is of the very end. Especially given the situation there where the police may have no idea who he is.

Right now in Madison it is hardly an ordinary work place experience at the capitol. It has absolutely nothing to do with getting comfortable with fascism, but using common sense in what could be a volatile situation.

Edited on Fri Mar-04-11 06:12 PM by Tx4obama

It says, quote:

When he tried to enter the building, an officer approached him. He showed her his ID, but she told him he was not allowed to enter.

"I said that's ridiculous," Milroy said. He walked by the first officer and showed his ID to a second officer, the one who ended up tackling him. According to Milroy, the first officer began to yell that he wasn't allowed in.

"I told (the second officer) I was a state representative and I needed to get to my office," Milroy said

-----------

He showed his ID twice before being tackled.

107. Here is his mistake: "He walked by the first officer..."
He should have sorted it out with that person first rather than just proceeding to the next officer. If he takes care of things with the first officer, the second one never comes into play. This should have been a non-incident, with the assemblyman getting to his office after talking it over with the first officer. That being said, the tackling was really unnecessary and that could have been handled better.

I'm betting that both sides wished they could take back how things went down.

23. OR maybe the police could have escorted the Rep. to his office,
let him get his clothes and escort him back outside. I watched the video a couple of times and I didn't see the Rep. pushing through a phalanx of police but rather the police descending upon him at the doorway when he then resisted.

What I really don't get is that Walker was ordered to open the capitol and that wasn't done as evidenced by the videos when Obey tried to enter. But now, a judge (different judge, I don't know) orders the building cleared and closed for 48 hours and it's done. Seems to me the governor didn't comply with an order but the protesters did. imho

AFTER he's been told he cannot go to his own office in a public building... and been manhandled. So he's a bit angry. He should be.

Getting his clothes may not be a civil right issue, but being able to enter a public building you work in to go to your office is. :eyes:

What the hell is wrong with being confrontational with the police?

Why do I always read some such comment every time there's a video of cops beating somebody up?

To me, if I want to get into my office for whatever reason, I should be let in. I'm sure the lawmakers normally have a right of access at any time.

66. Is there anything you won't let the police do to people?
Are there no limits? Shouldn't we then educate the public, especially children, that the police can order you to do anything they care to? The police have no limits, literally no limits, on their power over the lives of anybody they encounter? Perhaps they'll be reprimanded later, but if they feel they are confronted, in the confrontation they can invent the law, order you to do anything, beat you, taze you, or even kill you.

Wouldn't that be a good kind of course to give the kids in elementary school? Don' you think they should be taught the principle "The police have authority over you whenever they are present." Don't you think? Wouldn't that be the American thing to do?

It doesn't matter whether he was a bit angry or confrontational, and it doesn't matter whether he was drunk.

I may agree that it's not a civil rights issue; but it sure as hell is a constitutional one. The executive has no fucking business forbidding a member of the legislature from entering the legislative building (absent a few exceptional circumstances, e.g., bomb threats).

...I've been down to Madison the past two weekends. Going down again this weekend. Have talked to many cops, and thanked them for being in a tough spot. It's hard to see the entire context from the video, but it looks like both sides were a little aggressive. Granted, Rep. Milroy SHOULD have 24/7 access to his office. But that's not the cops' fault. They're just following orders. I blame Walker.

73. Walker's Supporters' Desperation Leads to Misrepresentation
I listened to Mark Belling on the way to the Sheboygan rally yesterday. He really was trashing all the Capitol protesters as dirty, unemployed, hippies who were doing millions of dollars in damage to the Capitol.

Walker's supporters' increasing desperation is showing through, and so they are spreading misinformation.

They know that a Bloomsberg Business Week poll showed "...60 percent of adults surveyed oppose efforts to weaken public employee union members' rights to collectively negotiate the terms of their employment." While there's variation in the poll results, there's no doubt that Americans don't favor the unilateral dictatorial removal of collective bargaining rights.

Walker's supporters are so desperate that they will even lie about millions of dollars in damage to the Capitol building. This charge, propagated by Walker's Department of Administration, which Dane County court judge, John C. Albert, found to be false when he wrote in his ruling reopening the Capitol that based on his investigation, “no injuries or damage to personal or government property."

Those who have been to Madison for the protests know that they are conducted in an orderly way, that people are helpful, and that only painter's tape is used to prevent damage to the Capitol's walls.

That's only one example of the desperation of Walker's supporters.

After the owner of one local Sheboygan restaurant learned that the dinner reservation was for a political event, she canceled the reservation, saying that "want to be seen as taking sides in political debate at all."

The local tea party, the Sheboygan Liberty Coalition, contrived the story to assert that "union thugs threatened Nino's, where SLC and AFP had planned on holding their event today. The owner received so many calls including threats to shut their business down, that she canceled our event."

The restaurant owner denied that. "I never got a call specifically at all from someone in a union saying they were going to shut me down," she said.

It's said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and this one sure is. The radio station, owned by Midwest Communications, airs Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and The Savage Nation, among others.

Walker's supporters aren't visible in this picture because the small overflow group (restaurant capacity is 275) was clustered around the building entrance.

The hundreds of collective bargaining supporters are the ones shown in the picture, yet the text of the picture implies that they are Walker supporters. Not so.

More misrepresentation showing their increasing desperation.

Walker's scheduled bus tour, created and financed by the Kochs, continues through Sunday, where it ends its state run in Madison.

....the protesters occupying the interior of the capitol that they would leave and allow the building to be cleaned over a 48 hour period, then it would be reopened, to anyone, I understood. So, this representative was trying to enter during the cleaning period, I suppose. However, it seems reasonable to me that the police would allow a representative to enter for the reasonable activity of retrieving his own clothes. Police totally inflexible, and perhaps the Rep. belligerent? Too much tension and antagonism building up on all sides, I fear for future conflict and possible violence.

get redress. Trying to push past a police line is not one of them. Was there some sort of exigency that justified his doing so? None that I am aware of. Ask to speak to a supervisor. Speak to one. Get his name and his confirmation that the police are under orders not to let him through, even though he is a duly elected representative. Then, go to a judge and try to get some kind of court order. Go to the press, too. etc. Pushing past a police line after they have made it very clear that they are not going to let you through is NOT the solution

87. Here's the statement from Rep. Nick Milroy
regarding his attempt to enter his office in the Capitol last night.

It reads: “Last night, I needed to go to my office to get some of my personal belongings and I was refused entrance to the Capitol.

"I have been extremely frustrated by Gov. Walker’s lockdown of the Capitol this week. This is supposed to be the people’s house, open for governmental business – but it has not been. And a court order yesterday backed us up on that point.

"For two days now, I have held office hours outside, in the cold, so that constituents could reach me. No lawmaker should have to go to that extent to talk to the people he represents.

"This armed-palace environment created by Gov. Walker has everyone feeling very tense and upset.

"Last night, I was too aggressive in attempting to re-enter the Capitol and law enforcement was too aggressive in trying to keep me out. But no harm was done, and other officers worked to defuse the situation. I was eventually allowed in and watched as other law enforcement, like Capitol Police Chief Tubbs, skillfully worked to clear the building during closed hours so hours and access can return to normal. Overall, law enforcement has done an excellent job in a ridiculous situation.

"Today, the new threat coming from Gov. Walker is that if he does not get his way and get his bill passed now, he will begin sending out pink slip layoff notices. These threats need to stop and we need to return the Capitol and Wisconsin government back to its longstanding tradition of clean and open government."

Also, an excerpt from the article above

Milroy also offered some more context for what happened Thursday.

According to Milroy, he "just wanted to get into my office to get my personal effects."

"I told (the second officer) I was a state representative and I needed to get to my office," Milroy said. "I think there was some confusion going on. I think I was being a little more aggressive than I probably should have."

112. That is absolutely ridiculous and I hope he sues the lot of them --
The police should have also had more sense than to do anything like that!

This is a political situation and the police should not be pushing this fascist

agenda of Walker's!!
