Former House of Representatives speaker to formally launch bid to take on Obama – ahead of Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin

Ewen MacAskill in Washington | Wednesday March 02 2011

The former speaker of the House of Representatives, Newt Gingrich, is planning to formally launch on Thursday his bid for the Republican nomination to take on Barack Obama next year, the first of the candidates to do so.

It has been a slow start this year compared with the same period in recent election cycles. Sarah Palin, the former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and other potential Republican candidates are holding back. The announcement by Gingrich, trailed by ABC News, might lead other candidates to join the fray.

Although the presidential election is not until November next year, the caucuses and primaries begin in January and the Republican hopefuls will have to spend much of this year campaigning.

Gingrich is scheduled to announce in Atlanta, Georgia, that he is setting up a presidential exploratory committee, the first stage in the process.

Megalomaniacal delusions of grandeur that are inevitably going to fail, but whatever.

30. Don't you really mean 3rd and 4th party?
Somehow I find it difficult to imagine Newt Getricher ever running on the same ticket with Sarah Trailertrash. And then of course there would be the ego question....which one of those fine folks would be relegated to the VP spot?

18. He's really not deluded
as he's not running to win, just to sell books and get some high priced speaking gigs. When the media forgets who you are, just run for president. The same goes for Sarah. She doesn't want to BE president (too much work and not enough money), she wants people to believe she's running so she'll still be considered newsworthy. I'm sure there will be others and it will be very entertaining.

26. Exactly
I wonder if there is a republican out there who actually WANTS to be president. Even if there is, he/she probably wouldn't want to run against Obama. I think sincere candidates are holding out for 2016. 2012 will just be a huge media circus.

11. Newt -- the notorious GOP propagandist -- good luck to us all--!!
No one is as adept at lying for the elites as Newt --

Remember when he left Congress, first thing he went to work on was

trying to suggest "The Chinese are Coming! The Chinese are coming!" --

perhaps fortunate that we needed their money -- and PNAC had put Iraq up

at the top of the list for war for OIL --

But you can see where the future lies under rw leadership!!

Violence, violence and more violence!!

19. Newt Gingrich will be crushed in the primaries
I expect a string of Republican Presidential want-to-be's to crawl out of the woodwork and proceed to be regulated to the trash heap of political ideas.

This is actually a good thing, because the Republicans will spend all of their campaign cash in the primaries and have none in reserve for the general election.

It is going to be a fast walk to victory for President Obama in 2012.

20. Remember Newt, "It is all about Character"
When you attacked Bill Clinton on the "Character" issue, it was about his lying about sex. He cheated on his wife so he had poor "Character".. In your own words, if he would LIE to his soul mate, he would LIE to anyone.. Remember Newt? When you swear an oath of fidelity in front of God and family and then break that oath, not once, not twice, but at least three seperate times, How can you possible expect us to believe a word you say?

29. The Dangerous thing about Newt is he is a good speaker.
This does not mean he is competent to lead, just that he projects a specific image.
That and his infidelity is old news. Everyone knows already.

Bottom line: Nothing worthwhile is ever easy. No mater what we will need to work for what we want.
