Ex-judge Mark A. Ciavarella Jr. guilty in 'cash for kids' case
Source: philly.com

A federal jury Friday found former Luzerne County Court Judge Mark A. Ciavarella Jr. guilty of racketeering in one of the nation's worst judicial scandals, a crime in which prosecutors said the former judge used children "as pawns to enrich himself."

The judges' scheme began unfolding about 10 years ago.

The pair cut off sending delinquent children to a county-owned facility, saying it was in terrible condition. This created a business opportunity for Powell, a wealthy tort lawyer and developer, who hired Mericle to construct a new facility - and secretly began paying millions to the judges.

Ciavarella sentenced youngsters to incarceration at a rate far higher than elsewhere in Pennsylvania.

2. Good news!
This miserable excuse for a human being deserves nothing less than to be in a prison far worse than the ones to which he sent the youngsters unfortunate enough to have their fate placed in his evil hands. To call him pond scum is an insult to actual pond scum, which I'm sure in the ecological scheme of things serves a worthy purpose.

 Tears for his victims.

5. Even better, throw him in Gen Pop...
And turn a blind eye.

I normally would never advocate such a horrendous and immoral course of action, but in this case, I'll make an exception.

7. No justice here, he wasn't brought up on criminal
charges of child abuse and whatever other charges apply to what was done to all these children.
If this guilty verdict means that the criminal charges are done, then hopefully there are many civil lawsuits being brought against him and all who was involved.
Read about Sandy Fonzo's son who committed suicide.

I am perplexed where all the lawyers were during these years, and it may be only kids who's parents couldn't afford private legal council were sent there.
But some had to have legal aid lawyers??

6. Oh well, it is 'Some' Justice
Now watch while his 'friends' give him no Jail time.
He will receive no sentence, that could be considered
'Justice'. This 'Corporate Sellout' did damage to
children, that can only be considered despicable.

What can be done with a people who won't even
defend their own children from Tyrants?
Pat downs of Children by the TSA a good example.

This Creature can only be considered a serial child abuser.
The fact he received 'Money' makes it all the more insidious.

16. Racketeering is a major federal offense
He should get mandatory time behind bars. There are guidelines that Federal judges have to follow when sentencing criminals that are found guilty. It is not like State courts where judges can pretty much do whatever they want in sentencing offenders. This man should get somewhere in the neighborhood of 8-15 years depending on the counts and whether they are run concurrently or consecutively. He will also be serving his time in federal prison, which is a lot worse than state facilities.

9. K&R- I am glad he ws found guilty. PA is a pretty corrupt state and many judges and
officials get away with shit for decades. Our state legislature is famous for making themselves rich.

I hope he gets the max in a real prison, not a tennis prison.

14. I live here
He got nowhere near the punishment he should have gotten . He ruined countless lives of young juveniles for petty offenses. It was heartbreaking to read about a mother of a young wrestling standout that got caught up in an underage drinking party only instead of getting a fine and probation was sent off to juvenile prison. One thing led to another with depression being the final result to this youngster which led to him ultimately killing himself which was the mothers only child.

21. His bio, from his wiki....
"Ciavarella is a lifelong resident of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, having been raised in the East End section of the city and attending St. Mary's High School. During his youth, he earned the nickname of "Scooch" (rhymes with pooch), which he shared with his father, Mark Ciavarella, Sr. After graduating from the local King's College he attended Duquesne University School of Law, receiving his law degree in 1975. Ciavarella entered private legal practice, becoming a partner in the firm of Lowery, Ciavarella and Rogers. From 1976 to 1978 he was city solicitor and then from 1978 until 1995 he served as solicitor for the city zoning board. In 1995 he ran for judge in Luzerne County and was elected to a ten year term. He was re-elected to a second ten year term in 2005. Ciavarella was also active in several civic and Catholic organizations. He is married to the former Cindy Baer and the couple have three children.<1>"

Hypocritical turd.
