National Christmas tree toppled
Source: CNN

The nation’s most energy-efficient National Christmas Tree doesn’t appear to be the nation’s most energy-resistant one. The 42-foot tall Colorado blue spruce snapped at its base Saturday morning in Washington.

While the cause of the tree toppling is yet unknown, the National Weather Service issued a “High Wind Warning” for the DC area Saturday noting that, “heavy wind gusts between 25 and 60 mph” were expected and supposed to be at their strongest right around the time a tipster told CNN the tree was downed.

1. No tree for me this year 'cause the kids were gone
but I usually get a small live tree I can transplant. But I never leave it up into February. Xmas was almost two months ago.

2. The wind is INSANE today.
No news story with the tree toppling. Anyone who's been outdoors in the Washington, D.C., area knows what it's like out there.

3. Eerie
It's almost as if the falling of the National Tree is a metaphor for the corporatism that produced climate change that produced the high winds - resulting in the falling of America.

14. Fires of the kind described in the Washington Post article
are one of the expected problems caused by man-caused climate change. I have a friend who studies this stuff. This is one of the effects that is predicted.

Cut back on carbon use.

20. LOL
The only people denying human-caused climate change are paid by oil companies.

The first guy to identify CO2 as a climate change gas was John Tyndall in 1859. Bell Labs produced a video (available on youtube) warning of human-caused climate change in 1958.

You're either 152 or 53 years behind the times. Try to keep up.

10. 'Line said the tree was
a Colorado blue spruce from York, Pa., that was planted on the Ellipse in 1978. It was 46 years old and almost 42 feet tall at the time it was felled. But there would be little time for mourning. The tree was scheduled to be mulched Saturday afternoon.

"I would say we're sad, but we knew this would happen," Line said, noting that the previous two National Christmas Trees were also felled by winds. "Unlike in the forest, this tree was fully exposed . There was nothing to protect it."'

And religion itself will soon topple over. However, I have a feeling that this will be filed under "W" for wishful thinking.

16. I saw the tree when I visited Washington last August.
This tree was planted in 1978

http://www.thenationaltree.org/event-history/national-christmas-tree/

I wonder what theory the religious crazies will come up with regarding the tree and look forward to a new tree for this Christmas.

17. Another victim.....
...of the "War On Christmas" no doubt. I recommend we commend this sacrifice with a ceremonial cremation.

- Along with chestnuts, white wine and a smoky brie......

18. The wind was bad
here yesterday. It snapped a couple of tree limbs on the maple in front of the house. The city came and took them away. It was very nice of them to do and I didn't even have to call to ask.

26. no, it sort of predictable. High winds. Trees falling down.
Happens a lot. This time it just happened to be the National Christmas tree, but I can guarantee you that neither the wind nor the tree were aware of that.
