Bench statement squelched by school

Concrete “senior benches” at La Jolla High School have been painted and repainted for decades with colorful student messages that typically include celebrations of teenage love, birthday wishes or football victories.

But the furniture forum has stirred a debate over free speech rights after campus officials blotted out political messages scrawled on the benches by Iranian-American students supportive of the Middle Eastern antigovernment movement.

Students painted “Freedom For Iran” and “Down with Dictator” on the benches Monday night following a massive protest in Iran. On Tuesday, the principal directed campus maintenance workers to paint over the political statements.

Don't want anyone thinking that overthowing an oppressive government is a good idea....at least not in THIS country.
