Republican: Auto recovery could make Sen. Stabenow harder to beat
By Sean J. Miller - 02/13/11 01:50 PM ET

A Michigan Republican considering a challenge to Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) said the race could be more difficult if the state's economy improves.

There's newfound optimism in Michigan that Detroit's auto industry is on the rebound after years of decline. That sense was perhaps best captured by Chrysler's two-minute "imported from Detroit" TV ad which aired during the Super Bowl last Sunday.

Stabenow is considered vulnerable and at least one of her potential challengers was in Washington this week making the rounds.

Former Michigan GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis attended the Conservative Political Action Conference and took time to meet with Sen. John Cornyn (Texas), who heads the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Since the official plan of the GOP is to govern in such a way that Obama becomes unelectable, it would seem that preventing job creation is their key to success.

1. What a bizzarro world
Imagine being so sociopathic as to see a resurgence of the auto industry as a bad development.

3. If the US had prospered under GWB, would a Dem be Prez now?
GWB screwed things up so bad with the wars and the deficit spending that the only real contest in 2008 was the Democratic primary. If Bush/Cheney had managed things better and the economy was still going strong, it would have been a much closer race in November.

So, yes, good times favor the incumbent. Whichever party.

If the Republicans can sabatoge the recovery (and not get caught), they have a better chance of unseating incumbent Democrats.
