Abortions would be costly, more difficult to get under new bills (Ohio)

COLUMBUS — Abortions could be more difficult to obtain and more costly for women in Ohio if bills pending in the legislature become law.

Earlier this month, state Rep. Danny Bubp, R-West Union, was almost giddy as he stood before reporters and started to talk about one of three new abortion-related bills rolled out by House Republicans.

“I am so glad that on Nov. 2, 2010, the voters sought a different direction for Ohio,” Bubp said. “That allows us to be here today with some certainty that Ohio Right to Life will have a place at the table, and we’ll be able to move meaningful legislation.”

Because of the paragraph restrictions, here, in a nutshell, is what the Ohio House and Senate are considering:

• Courts would be required to ask teens seeking abortions if they understand mental and physical complications. (House Bill 8 and House Bill 63)

• Health care plans that are part of the state insurance exchange would not be able to cover elective abortions (House Bill 79).

• No abortions after a heartbeat is detected (as early as five weeks).

• No abortions after 20 weeks gestation (House Bill 78 and Senate Bill 72).

• No abortions afer 22 weeks gestation (House Bill 7).

If you care to read the text of the bills in full, here is the link.

1. to all the woman-hating, pro-forced birthers out there, a big FU
we know they hate women, but the speed and audacity with which they are openly displaying that hatred is almost staggering. this is the 21st century--and they are taking us back to the dark ages.

2. I have a feeling they aren't going to drag their feet on this.
Unlike, say, legislation that would have made clergy among mandatory reporters of child abuse. Those bills practically died in committee.

4. Indeed. Or, rather,
Nobody Fuck You for the rest of your natural life. Psychos. I will never understand people whose misogyny extends to wanting to control the reproductive health choices of others.

5. Meet Danny Bubp

Odds are real good he will never be faced w/ a choice if he should carry
a child to full term.

In 2012 in Ohio the dems should clean up because outside of the fundy
idiots no women should ever vote for a republican.

11. You give Ohio voters way too much credit.
There are only really two Democratic strongholds now. Cleveland and Dayton, and I don't know if you can even call Dayton a stronghold anymore. THe population is becoming mainly rural and extremely conservative, both in religion and politics.

The GOP plays the voters there like violins -- for instance, one of the things that doomed John Kerry there in 2004 (in addition to Ken Blackwell's shenanigans) was a state constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. They came out in droves for that (like Karl Rove thought they would), which in turn cancelled out any strong Kerry support in urban areas. I hope, though, that with all the stuff John Kasich wants to do it will begin hitting just a little too close to home and the voters will wake up. But I doubt it.

As I said upthread, I think these bills will quickly gain traction, especially with the makeup of the Ohio General Assembly these days and the increasingly fundamentalist nature of the state as a whole.

14. "They came out in droves for that .... "
No they didn't but that was the cover story behind the stolen election.
There was not a wave of first time voters who surged to the polls
to vote against gay marriage ..... the people who were on record for
voting against gay marriage were not first time voters.

It used to be said about Ohio the dems win N.E. Ohio and the repubs win
Cincinnati and whom ever wins Columbus wins the state .... but Kerry
one Cleveland, Cincinnati, Dayton, Toledo, Springfield, Mansfield, Akron,
Warren, Canton, Youngstown, and Portsmouth but amazingly W bush still
won the state. (not really)

Columbus is a very democratic town but thanx to crack and pack districts
the republicans get to win gerrymandered House districts in central OH.

18. They are bringing the back room butchers back

And why do men think they have a voice in this? A condom is all they need to prevent an abortion if they are so against it.

K&R!
