BANKS TO FACE TAX PROTESTS (UK)

CAMPAIGNERS against tax avoidance are planning sit-in protests at branches of Barclays next Saturday.


Direct action group UK Uncut plans to transform the banks to resemble public spaces such as libraries, forests, leisure centres, youth groups, theatres, swimming pools and hospitals, which it says are under threat from Government cuts.

The protesters believe the spending cuts can be avoided by making sure big corporations do not use legal avoidance schemes to reduce their tax bills.

UK Uncut, which has held protests at Vodafone, Top Shop and Boots stores over the issue, also plans to occupy branches of Royal Bank of Scotland and NatWest later this month.

A spokesman said: “The banks are holding the Government and country to ransom but it’s society that’s too big to fail, not the broken banking system.”
