LOGAN, Iowa — The pickup truck driver who slammed into four motorcyclists on Interstate 29 last summer pleaded guilty Thursday, admitting he was drunk at the time of the deadly crash.

“I am very remorseful,'' Andrew Schlichtemeier, 22, said in court. “I am at fault.''

Schlichtemeier, of Murray, Neb., pleaded guilty to four counts of vehicular homicide in the Aug. 9 wreck that killed the four riders, who were returning home from Sturgis, S.D.

Harrison County District Judge Jeffrey Larson scheduled Schlichtemeier's sentencing for March 24.

2. Well, I respect him for admitting guilt
Would rather see him rehabbed for alcohol than jailed for 20 years.

Would this be the case if he was from a wealthy family?

His original plea was not guilty BTW.

a 21-year-old University of Nebraska-Lincoln honor student (was 2 years underage at the time)

Snip: Schlichtemeier was convicted in Lancaster County Court of Snipdriving while intoxicated in 2008.

Lincoln Police Sgt. Don Scheinost said Schlichtemeier was stopped downtown Sept. 13, 2008, by an officer prior to a Nebraska football game after he was spotted driving the wrong way on 10th Street.

Schlichtemeier was initially charged with first-offense driving under the influence, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and negligent driving.

The marijuana and negligent driving charges were dropped after he pleaded guilty to the DUI offense. He successfully completed his probation requirements in November 2009.

8. Only a year of probation?
This is where it went south, it takes far longer than 1 year of living clean, especially when you're *that* young... 5 years of passing "no drugs, no alcohol, probation" could have saved 5 lives: The motorcyclists, and the offender.

4. if he spends
10-20 years at the greybar hotel that should be enough to wean a person from alcohol without having to attend any kind of group sessions.

7. On the contrary
He can almost be guaranteed to come out dysfunctional in a number of ways, no surprise if multiple drug abuse is one of them.

5. We had a drunk cop kill a motorcyclist - the cop will probably walk free.
His buddies in blue made sure that any evidence against him was tainted and will most likely be thrown out of court.

9. Damn
Drunk and/or sober, motorists just don't see bikers... haven't riden for awhile but I have a full leg-length scar, seven surgeries and lots of memories that make me cringe when I hear these stories. (I'm lucky to be alive)
