They say, "Dueling claims to the property are now before the Supreme Court," and don't identify one side of the "duel." They extensively quote Jeannette Schiess, whom they say, "runs the project," without identifying who owns the project. She speaks with the royal "we." "Once
our hotel is recovered," she says, "...
we'll have meetings and conversations with the democratic authorities and representatives of the island;
we've always been ready to talk.
We don't have anything to offer those who have opted for violence and the use of force; there's no such thing as 'peaceful takeovers'"--but who the other part of "we" is, they don't say. They give the name of the development--Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa--but never disclose the name of the company or individuals who own it (or claim to own it).
Her accusation of violence rings hollow. Even on the face of the facts, as disclosed in the article, all violence was on the part of the police, acting for "owners" who got their billion dollar property from somebody who got it "grandfathered in" back in 1979 (while thousands of Chileans were being tortured and murdered by Pinochet's forces). This certainly raises questions about bribery, bullying, threats or whatever may have gone into that acquisition. But even more intriguing is the mystery company or individuals who "own" it now, and why the Pest never mentions them.
I presume that this information is obtainable, since there is a lawsuit about "dueling claims" to the property. Normally parties to a lawsuit have to disclose who they are. Or the Pest could have asked Ms. Schiess. Even if it's a dummy company, it would provide a lead to who got it from Pinochet and claims ownership now. It is not believable that the Pest doesn't know who these "owners" are. We can only conclude that they don't want
us to know.
You can sometimes learn things from the "black holes" where information should be, in corpo-fascist 'news' articles, if you are alert to what is NOT being said. I'm going to Google around and see if the company or individuals who claim this property as theirs are mentioned elsewhere. I am intrigued.

"The hotel was bought from the Chilean government by the Scheiss family, a powerful investment group, in the 1990s, but the Rapa Nui say their ancestors had been cheated into giving up the land years before."http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-12378736(includes pix of bloodied Rapa Nui indigenous protestors)
So Jeannette Schiess is (presumably) a member of the family--a family that the BBC describes as a "powerful investment group"--that acquired the Rapa Nui's stolen property some time after Pinochet stepped down (1990).
It is very interesting that the Pest never mentions this. We get the impression from the article that she is just a manager of the hotel/spa--and is just acting as company flak-catcher, as managers do. They say she "runs the project" but DON'T say that she is an owner nor that the owners are "a powerful investment" family.
Well, thank you, BBC! They sometimes carry water for "organized money" (as FDR put it) but you can often find important information from BBC articles that is "black holed" in the corpo-fascist press.
Now to find out more about the Scheiss investment group.
