Muslim Brotherhood says no plans for Egypt presidential bid (or posts in a coalition government)

CAIRO, Feb 4 (Reuters) - The Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's biggest opposition group, has no ambitions to run for the Egyptian presidency, a leading member of the Islamist movement told Al Jazeera television on Friday.

Mohammed al-Beltagi also said government representatives who had invited the Muslim Brotherhood to talks on political reform had indicated that the group, which is formally banned, would receive official recognition as a party.

"We are ready to negotiate after (the end of) the Mubarak regime," he said, adding that the government was "flirting" with the group.

"We have said clearly that we have no ambitions to run for the presidency, or posts in a coalition government," he said.

Muslim Brotherhood activists have been taking part in mass protests against President Hosni Mubarak's rule, but the group says it has had no role in organising the demonstrations. (Writing by Tom Perry; Editing by Jon Boyle)

1. Apparently
despite the fact they have never been allowed to even field candidates their opposition party represents c. 20% of the population and at that figure is the largest opposition party. Their candidates use the back door of standing as independants.

As an aside there is the oddity that in the last elections only 3 million voted out of an eligible number of 18 million and the 3m included all of the suspect / fraudulent votes.

4. Yes, good points
I suspect the percentage of voters in a proper election will be one of the highest we've ever seen. The problem of corruption is going to take a very long time to solve though, if what I've witnessed in Indonesia is anything to go by.

2. by the time our media is done with this
They will have reversed the whole thing.

"We have said clearly that we have ambitions to run for the presidency, and posts in a coalition government."

That is, if this is reported at all.

6. Good question. My guess is that they don't want to be a bone of contention.
They could be simply getting out of the way because they want Mubarak gone just as much as everybody else and there have been just too many people going on and on about how much of a boogie man they are.

7. Sorry, this screaming meme will live on one way or another via our MSM.
CNN has had Tony Blair on calling for the management of Egypt's unrest..so has Mort Zuckerman.

The scary Muslim Brotherhood lie is out there. Morgan did later interview Peter Bergen who
when asked stated there is no threat by the MB in his opinion..nada.

The problem with this type of reporting is Piers Morgan has given an open platform to Blair the night before
last, then Zuckerman last night. Bergen is not there to challenge either, only asked his opinion after the two idiots
spread their bullshit propaganda.
