Fox News Team Severely Beaten, Hospitalized In Cairo
Source: Deadline.com

157. No they don't.
They don't even think about "the troops", unless the issue is thrust before them by corporate propaganda. And then, they are simply bamboozled into equating the support of militarism with "supporting the troops". As another poster mentioned, key veterans issues are not even dimly considered by rightists.

197. The right "SAYS" they support the troops
except when the troops need medical care, or improved armour, or the ability to spend a year at home before being redeployed - then they don't give a shit. They never support or help the people fighting the war, just support the war vendors. They are mainly for "all war all the time" due to the enriching factor this has on their big campaign contributors like Lockheed, Halliburton, etc.

143. It doesn't automatically make you not an astronaut, either
But it does mean that you are not being employed as one. Faux News keeps far too close a rein on the content they allow to go out on their network to ever allow any actual journalism to take place. It may well be that there are people who are trained as journalists who work for Faux News, but since such people are not allowed to practice their profession while in Faux News' employ, it doesn't really make much difference what their profession is.

Because, honestly, no matter how the information is spun by the anchors, it's just nice to see SOME information come out of that blackout.

I consider everyone from AJE all the way down to people on Twitter as reporters. That's what the Fox crew was in there doing--reporting. I don't think either of us are going to convince each other one way or the other, so I think we may have to agree to disagree on this one. I'm just happy you're not one of the ones cheering the beatings :)

150. Frankly, I take more seriously the reports of the twitterers
At least they aren't trained professionals getting paid to warp and distort the facts. I am a little hypersensitive on this as I did my masters in public policy and actually took courses in what the university called "strategic communication," but which were, by any objective definition, propaganda courses. We were taught all sorts of tricks on how to prove that black is white, night is day, and the moon is made of green cheese. I've become so jaded, I hardly believe anything I read anymore unless I can see the complete methodology of how the raw data was gathered.

... that dedicates itself to spreading propaganda prejudicial to their interests.

Before you jump down my throat, I'm not advocating violence against Faux News propagandists. But clearly their assailants perceived that these guys were not objective, impartial journalists there to observe and report, nor is it unreasonable that they should believe as much. It therefore does not follow that a blanket ban on violence towards journalists would hinder them from attacking Faux News propagandists.

But the average Egyptian? I doubt it.

They saw a camera, and a guy with a microphone talking into the camera. Journalist. They beat them up because they were journalists. I don't know how many times I can say this, but the average Wehrmacht Private isn't the same as Hitler.

Hell, maybe a few of these people just wanted to get into journalism and move on to something else...I doubt any of them are the true believers in the propaganda.

137. Perhaps not
And again, I'm not suggesting that Faux News employees are any less deserving of protection from assault than anyone else is; I'm only saying that I don't think they are deserving of more protection than anyone else is.

The original poster was suggesting that journalists should be understood to have blanket protection by virtue of their profession, something akin to the blanket immunity that we afford to diplomats. Personally, I would agree. Journalism, like diplomacy, serves a vital common good, i.e., keeping the public informed, and that does deserve special recognition. But consider, if you will, someone who enters the US as a diplomat but, in reality, is an assassin. That person cannot go out and kill people and then invoke diplomatic immunity because, no matter what they choose to call themselves or what kind of passport they may have, they clearly are not here as a diplomat. Their function is therefore not protected and they are subject to the same hazards and risks that everyone else faces. What Faux News does is substantively no different than what Leni Riefenstahl and the Nazi Ministry of Propaganda did. If Leni Riefenstahl described herself as a journalist entitled to special protections afforded to them, would we credit her with those protections simply because she claimed to be a journalist?

142. The average camera crew or reporter in Cairo isn't Leni Riefenstahl though
They're just that--reporters and camera crews. And Fox has been blaming this on the Mubarak thugs anyway, so I don't see them exactly propagandizing this one way or the other (no more than the rest of the MSM is).

Propagandist is a subjective term as well. One man's propagandist is another man's journalist. Just because we don't like the message spun by the anchors or the higher-ups, doesn't mean the reporters on the ground in Cairo aren't journalists. I'd be singing a different tune if it were some of the worst Fox offenders involved, but these guys are journalists.

Your logic falls right apart there--there's no subjective view of someone who kills another. Whether you call him a hero, freedom fighter, murderer, or assassin, it's just that--he killed someone. In no way can you confuse a murderer with a diplomat.

145. Admitted
The distinction between propagandist and journalist is obviously more subjective than that between assassin and diplomat - I chose a starkly black and white analogy in an effect to illustrate the point I was trying to make - but I don't think that the existence of a subjective component invalidates the argument entirely. Not every person who calls himself a journalist is, in fact, a journalist simply because s/he chooses to call him/herself such.

In times of crisis overseas, I tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to journalists...the free flow of information out of a lot of these places is so restricted I'm willing to give a lot of leeway to anyone who has the courage and the ability to report from it. Which is exactly how I feel about this Fox crew.

174. gad I hate stupid stinking mindless dogshit
go ahead, tell me this guy isn't a journalist:

Greg Palkot serves as foreign correspondent for FOX News Channel (FNC). He covers the world from FNC's London bureau.

Palkot is a key contributor to FOX News' coverage of the War on Terror. He's been embedded with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, filed from the scene of Saddam Hussein's capture, is following the hunt for Usama bin Laden and Al Qaeda in Pakistan's border area, as well as the deadly attacks on Benazir Bhutto there. He's also reported from inside Iran and on the Mideast including Gaza and Lebanon.

In Europe, Greg was live at the scene of the Russian invasion of Georgia, he covered the fiery riots surrounding Paris, the crash of the Concorde, as well as the deaths of Princess Diana and Pope John Paul II.

From Africa, Palkot has reported inside war-torn Sudan, he's followed the strife in Somalia and modern piracy in the waters off Africa's coast.

And in Asia, he's reported live from North Korea, from Beijing on the Olympics, from the devastation of the Tsunami in Indonesia and relief efforts for cyclone-hit Burma.

Greg has featured in documentaries on Iran's controversial nuclear efforts, Iraq's scandal-plagued Oil-for-Food program and the invasion of Fallujah.

Palkot has received Emmy Awards for Best Reporting, Best News Coverage and Best Feature, also earning honors from the Associated Press, United Press International and the International Film and Television Awards.

Prior to joining FNC, he's been an anchor, reporter and producer, serving on programs on PBS-TV, Financial News Network (now CNBC), WABC and CBS.

A graduate of Wesleyan University, Palkot speaks French, Germa

But if Faux Noise reports that those who harmed them were anti-Mubarak protesters, I won't be surprised. We've seen how Faux will do literally anything to adhere to the favored story line.

Here's wishing them a speedy recovery. Too many journalists lose their lives doing their jobs in troubled spots. Anderson Cooper and his crew were pushed around and he was hit on the head. Christiane Amanpour and her crew were verbally menaced and told to get out of there. All were attacked by the pro Mubarak mobs.

I don't find this amusing at all.

109. The men and women that cover these stories are targets, it comes with the job...
they were targeted by thugs, paid operators for Murabak. The Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians that have protested against Murabak have been remarkably peaceful, protecting their home treasures and have taken a violent tack only after being attacked byt a pretty small group of miscreants.

I respect the men and women that go into harms way to bring us news that is truly worthy of things we should know. What happens in Egypt will have ramifications all over the area, we are sitting here watching history unfold, I hope those that were injured heal quickly and I thank them for their dangerous service.

Looks like tomorrow we may see some pretty hefty changes. There is revolution in the air, and if change can be made with a minimal amount of violence, we will all be better for it.

As far as the clown car that has Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh, Savage, O'Reilly and their ilk, they have always been cowards, will always be cowards, and toss in their worthless wooden nickles from the confines of protected sets and studios. Swine at the trough.

113. I would feel sorry for them if they were there to cover the real story.
But knowing Fuc News.

Fuck them.

Republicans don't understand a situation until they are actually in that situation.

It's how they are wired. They can't see how it feels to be in someone's shoes unless they are actually standing in those shoes.

See Michale Savage asking Clinton for help with being banned from the UK for hate speach.

As the Christian Reich Bible says.

Treat your neighbors as you wish to be treated.

Yesterday they were cheering Anderson Cooper getting punched in the face on their website. It was funny.

If it takes a couple of "Journalist" from Fuc News to get their ass whipped to understand the situation.

So be it.

You should have seen the comments under the article about Anderson Cooper.

Now that their own journalists were attacked you can't view the article anymore.

It forwards you to an article about their journalist being attacked.

Why are so many people in this thread pretending to use the concern for the well being of those journalist as an excuse to shut down any sort of discussion regarding the lack of credibility of the company they work for, i.e. FOX News?

One can feel sorry that these journalist were beaten up, and at the same time recognize that FOX News has tried to spin these events developing in Northern Africa for the past few weeks to fit their own fascist narrative. Multitasking, what a concept...

1) DU never tires to discuss the lack of credibility of Fox. I thought we could come together for once to show some sympathy for some journalists beat up doing their job.

2) The decisions at upper-level Fox management have nothing to do with these people being brutalized. Do you think the average Egyptian knows what Fox is the same way we do?

125. Egypt Chaos: Dozens of Reporters Beaten, Arrested
CAIRO -- Menacing gangs backing President Hosni Mubarak attacked journalists and human rights activists Thursday in an ugly turn in Egypt's crisis as government opponents pushed supporters out of Cairo's main square in a second day of battles. Organizers called for protesters trying to topple the regime to fill every square in the huge capital on Friday.

------

Pro-government mobs beat foreign journalists with sticks and fists Thursday. The Committee to Protect Journalists said 24 reporters were detained in 24 hours, including representatives of The Washington Post and The New York Times. Twenty-one journalists were assaulted, including two with Fox News.

One Greek journalist was stabbed in the leg with a screwdriver, and a photographer was punched in the face, his equipment smashed. The Arabic news network Al-Arabiya pleaded for the army to protect its offices and journalists, and Al-Jazeera said four of its correspondents were attacked. The BBC's foreign editor said security forces had seized the network's equipment in a hotel to stop it broadcasting.

------

Human rights activists were also targeted. Military police stormed the offices of an Egyptian rights group as activists were meeting and arrested at least 30, including two from the London-based Amnesty International, Amnesty spokesman Tom Mackey said. New York-based Human Rights Watch said one of its activists was also among those arrested.

Without actually counting and/or analyzing. Just seems like most are sensible and compassionate. And I have to wonder as some already have, (including myself above) if some aren't "planted" to make us look bad.....And yes, some are no doubt progressives who seem to have forgotten, or ignored the fact that human compassion is or should be, at the very heart of being a liberal or progressive. But, unfortunately,as the old saying goes , there's one (or in this case, a few) in every crowd...

169. I am probably going to get rocks thrown at me for this
First off, I am somewhere between Let and far left. I think Obama has made mistakes by wussing out where he should have told the Blue Dogs to get out of the way, though I also believe he is the best president we have had in decades.

Second off, we all know that the percentage of people on the left who want violence is much much smaller than most people think it is, and it is a damn lot less than anyone on the right thinks it is. Ted Rall can call for violence, but we know that the vast majority of the left would at the very least try to make sure human rights were respected.

That being said:

Some people act like armchair generals, calling for blood. Of course, that plays right into the stereotypes and propaganda. No, I am not talking about Gibbs mythical "professional left" that just wishes the DLC would shift a little leftward, I mean people who seem to think that change will only come about with violence, who look forward to society decaying. To that I say, I oppose you every bit as much as the Right wing, for both are willing to shed blood for glory, innocents be damned!

170. I wonder what Mr. Palkot thinks about the idea of imprisoning or
worse Assange at this time. Fox News has to make up its mind. Either everybody has free speech, or nobody has it. You can't have it both ways. It's one of those thins in life that either is or is not. There is no compromise on free speech.

By definition, free speech is either always free or it is not at all free.

195. It is terrible when members of the press or others who
exercise their right to free speech are beaten or threatened. Assange, like the Fox news reporters has been threatened. Ironically, some of those supporting the threats against Assange are prominent guests, possibly even newscasters on Fox. That is the tie between the OP and my post. I just expected people to be intelligent enough to see the link and understand the relevance. My mistake. Now that I have explained, I hope you will understand.

The Fox reporters have the universal human right to exercise free speech and that should be respected. The Mubarak government considers its repression of the protestors against the government to be a secret matter. That is the way things work in repressive regimes. Our government considers the matters in its diplomatic cables to be secrets. In fact, none of those things are really secrets. They are the people's business. The Fox reporters are revealing Mubarak's secrets. Assange is revealing Obama's secrets. Both the Fox reporters and Assange should be permitted to exercise the right of free speech, the sharing of information, without intimidation, without fear, without repression.

For the record, you don't speak for me or the vast majority of DU. But if you want to cast your lot with the likes of Beck and Limbaugh who were cheering on the beating of NYT reporters yesterday, that's your immature choice.

Rachel had an excellent piece on the beating and detaining of journalists and reporters on her show last night. It was well produced and eye opening. And as she always does, Rachel took the high road and spoke of the victims the same way - not dividing how she covered them based on the outlet's pov.

“Wahhh...Why are they covering anything real anyway? Isn't some richy getting a dick enlargement somewhere?
That network is a circus! Who needs them?”

I promise that these are not nearly as bad as the ones I read on a local tea party site about Anderson Cooper and can’t compare to the disgusting remarks on American Grand Jury, but...I was still shocked at some of the comments. There were more, but they must have been deleted last nite.

The majority of comments were in support of the FOX crew. I think maybe the negative ones stood out so much that some of us multiplied them in our subconscious. I honestly thought there were a lot more, as well.

208. Maybe the Egyptian people realize that Fox "News"
personnel are very likely at least friendly to the dictator, and possibly in his employ. As I remarked elsewhere, if the people in the US were to revolt against the Bush Crime Family, every last Fox employee would be on the side of the oppressors, and thus an enemy of the revolution. At hat point do their "journalism" credentials become overridden by their sympathy/complicity with the tyrants?
