Steele out, backs Cino

Michael Steele has just dropped out of the race to retain his job at the helm of the RNC and endorsed Maria Cino to be the committee's next chair.

"At this time I will step aside for others to lead," he said.

"It's very clear the party wants to do something a little different and maybe a little better," Steele said in announcing his decision to withdraw his candidacy.

He received a standing ovation from committee members.

1. In other words, he is avoiding being defeated.
Sorry, Mr. Steele. Overt racism won the election in 2010. They're done with you and your 'kind.'

Fading Michael Steele abandons bid for Republican chair
Fri Jan 14, 2011 4:03pm EST

OXON HILL, Maryland (Reuters) - Embattled Michael Steele abandoned his bid for a new term as Republican National Committee chairman on Friday when it became clear that he did not have enough support to win.

After four rounds of voting by party leaders, Steele was losing support instead of gaining it.

"It's very clear that the party wants to do something a little different," he said. "At this time I will step aside for others to lead."

6. Why am I reminded of that scene from "Trading Places"?
with Eddie Murphy hiding in the bathroom while the Duke brothers are speaking and then one of them says, "Do you really think I'd let a 'nigger' run the family business?"

15. this IS racism!
Under him, the Democrats got their assess HANDED to them in the 2010 elections. And yet, he's fired?!

What's a Brutha' gotta do???

Don't give me that "His silly comments" excuse. They (Repukes) are ALLLLLL silly.

If this doesn't prove Republican racism, what does?

18. Not all Republicans are as prone to gaffes as Steele is
I have my doubts whether Steele deserves much credit for the results of the midterms. The Republicans probably would have cleaned up anyway regardless of who was running the RNC. I think his problem was that he made too many negative headlines himself. Some were deserved, others less so, but that comes with running any large organization.

Perhaps his whole tenure was a fluke to begin with -- it seemed to me a little-thought-out attempt to shove an African-American to the front of the Republican party in the wake of Obama's rise. The Republicans don't have a 'deep bench' when it comes to African Americans, so Steele was the best they could do.

I, for one, am going to miss him :)
